Battle time

Xbox 360 gamers are to get their first free game this autumn as a new wave of free-to-download and pay games are released on Microsoft's console. ?

ToyLogic's Happy Wars, a multiplayer combat game, will be free to download and play for Xbox Live Gold members.

"Happy Wars is a large-scale multiplayer action game that can be enjoyed by up to 30 players in online battle," says the company.

Although the developers haven't said so, we suspect that, as with the standard "free" apps on your mobile phone, ToyLogic is hoping players will buy additional extras and upgrades within the game. Still, for the time being it says that it is free. ?

Happy Wars will be released on Xbox LIVE Arcade in Autumn 2012 as a free download for all Xbox LIVE Gold Members.

Happy Wars isn't the only free-to-play game heading to the Xbox 360. Signal Studios' action title Ascend: New Gods will be released next year with the free-to-play business model.
