1990: Clovis Community College’s board of directors unanimously adopted a “smoke-free” policy statement, the first step in efforts to have a smoke-free campus.

Campus polls showed 695 of the 975 students voted for a smoke-free campus. Faculty voted 59-15 in favor of a smoke-free campus.

“We are on the way to become a smoke-free environment,” board Chairman Robert Lydick said.

Mayor Pro-Tem Richard Rowley told the Clovis News-Journal that he’d heard of Clovis residents going out of town to buy alcohol because of high prices in Clovis.

Despite having to drive to Amarillo or Albuquerque, Rowley said residents had told him they could “easily save enough money to justify the trip.”
