The Baptist Convention of New Mexico Missions Team is sponsoring the 4Missions5K on Nov. 7. Proceeds from the 5K will go to the Portales Christian Women’s Job Corps, which is a ministry of the Women’s Missionary Union built in with the Baptist Children’s Home.

BCNM Mission Strategist Connie Dixon said the 5K is open to the public, who can go to www.bcnm.com to get a registration form and T-shirt for $25.

The run is open to all ages, but Dixon said they will have a separate “KidsK” so the children participating won’t have to go as far.

Participants can competitively or non-competitively run or walk the 3.2 mile route, Dixon said, and the KidsK will take place on the Eastern New Mexico University campus.

After the 5K, a free brunch will be provided by the Baptist Foundation of New Mexico and a missions fair will be set up in the gym where Dixon said people can be exposed to mission opportunities to get involved with in New Mexico.

According to Dixon, the proceeds from the last 5K that took place in August 2013 went to the children’s home and back-to-school needs, and this year, the proceeds will go to the Portales Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC).

“CWJC is a ministry of Women’s Missionary Union, and the one in Portales is a ministry built in with the Baptist Children’s Home,” Dixon said. “They’re looking for an opportunity to not only help the children, but they’re seeing more and more that the parents want to have a more holistic approach to the children. Through this program, they can offer parenting classes that will aid in the parenting skills they need.”

Dixon said CWJC gives women the skills they need to go out into the workforce, get a job and be able to stand on their own two feet.

“It’s built around a Christian atmosphere to where they get to participate in Bible study and do the things that we feel as a denomination are important in life,” she said.
