Company Reaches 2013 Goal of Contributing to the Planting of 50,000 Trees to High-Need National Forest

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 18, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions is proud to announce that it has reached its 2013 goal of contributing to the planting of 50,000 trees to the Arbor Day Foundation to help rebuild forests. For every eligible imageRUNNER ADVANCE multifunction system sold since April 1, Canon contributed to the planting of one tree to Blackwater River State Forest, located in Florida’s northwest panhandle until we reached our 50,000 tree goal. Since inception of the Canon Forest Program in 2009, Canon has contributed a total of more than 250,000 trees to high-need national forests.

“Together with the Arbor Day Foundation, we are proud to reach our goal of contributing to the planting of 50,000 trees to benefit Blackwater River State Forest, one of the largest forests in Florida,” said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Marketing, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A. “Canon is committed to reducing its environmental impact throughout the entire product lifestyle and through our Forest Program our customers are helping to leave a greener footprint for future generations to come.”

Encompassing approximately 213,000 acres, the Blackwater River State Forest is home to one of the most diverse habitats with more than 100 species of plants and animals to be found on a quarter of an acre in the U.S. The newly planted trees will help provide habitat for a variety of wildlife including the black bear and river otter, and will also help bring the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and Kirtland’s Warbler back to the area. The forest has the largest remaining contiguous tract of longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem in the world.

“The Blackwater River State Forest Recovery Campaign is about bringing life back to Northwest Florida,” said Dan Lambe, Arbor Day Foundation vice president of programs. “These trees are part of the long and important history of the people and land of this state. We thank Canon for years of generous support of our nation’s forests, and remind folks that for just $1 per tree, or about $500 per acre, supporters can make a big difference at any level.”

Other forests that Canon has contributed trees to since 2009 are, Bayfield County Forest in Wisconsin, Manchester State Forest in South Carolina and John Bethea State Forest in Florida. With every donation made, a certificate of where the tree will be planted can be created for each customer to remind them of the positive environmental impact of their purchase and how they are leaving a greener footprint for generations to come.

In addition to the Canon Forest Program, Canon incorporates a range of technologies into its line of business imaging products aimed at helping customers lower energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability goals. All imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs employ certain plastic parts fabricated with 100 percent recycled plastic from retired products, as well as bio-based plastic, a plant-derived compound that replaces certain petroleum-based plastic parts. Using a combination of fusing technologies and low-melting point toner to help decrease power requirements and reduce energy use during warm-up and standby modes, all imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs achieve best-in-class Total Energy Consumption (TEC) ratings, meet ENERGY STAR® standards, and earn an EPEAT® Gold or Silver rating, depending on the model (EPEAT is a global registry for greener electronics).
