Connected Cafe Twitter Chats
Connected Cafe is a series of Twitter chats (#ce14) each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7-8pm EDT throughout October, co-sponsored by ISTE and CTQ. Stop Animation Keeps Learning Going

Tips for making stop animation easier to incorporate in the classroom and answers to stop animation questions will be shared from my ten years of experiences with this activity.

New Frontiers in Assessment Hot Seats with NCLE
The dominant practices in assessment today have not kept pace with what we know about how students learn. To help broaden the conversation about assessment, NCLE will be putting an expert or team of experts on innovative approaches to assessment on the “hot seat” each week in October. Each week’s guest(s) will participate throughout the week in a conversation about their work and the questions it raises about the future of assessment in an online discussion forum. October 6-12 – Scott Filkins, Champaign Unit 4 Schools
Scott Filkins has worked as an educator in a variety of roles, including English teacher and department chair, reading teacher, instructional coach, and curriculum coordinator for English Language Arts, grades 6-12. Scott also co-directs the University of Illinois Writing Project and has taught a highly successful online course on formative assessment through the National Council of Teachers and English. He is the author of Beyond Standardized Truth: Improving Teaching and Learning through Inquiry-Based Reading Assessment (NCTE, 2012), winner of the 2013 CEE James N. Britton Award.
Book Clubs
The Connected Educators Book Club is an opportunity for you to read books about or related to connected learning or online communities, then discuss them with your peers and in some cases the author. Discussions happen through asynchronous (self-paced) dialog and through other scheduled activities such as Twitter chats, webinars and more. You’ll also receive weekly emails from the club highlighting the latest book-related discussions and events. There are over 10 books to choose from and book clubs are kicking off now!

Saturday, October 11, check out all these great edCamps. What’s an edCamp you ask? edCamp is a 1-day “unconference.” It is a chance for those in education (teachers, administrators, etc) to get together, network, share and learn. The day is planned during the kick off at the beginning of the day where any participant can propose a session idea/topic to the session list. All sessions are laid out and then everyone attends sessions they want during the rest of the day.

Breaking the Mold: Diversifying STEM Academia
Wednesday, October 8 • 9:30am – 11:00am – Scientific and technological innovation arises from new approaches and diversity of ideas. Too few women and individuals of color pursue and complete STEM degrees, leaving an untapped talent pool. It’s clear that U.S. colleges need to do a better job recruiting and retaining these individuals, but how? Can institutions attract students from underrepresented groups when their STEM departments don’t reflect the diversity of students they aim to serve?
The data make these disparities palpable: Although women with STEM Ph.D.’s are likelier to start their careers in academia, their male peers get more of the highly coveted faculty appointments at research institutions, giving them an early advantage to climb university ranks. And faculty of color are severely underrepresented in the top 100 STEM departments, accounting for just 5 percent.
Since colleges and universities exert great influence over the makeup of our future STEM workforce, the American Institutes for Research is hosting a discussion to explore the hurdles underrepresented groups face when pursuing an academic STEM career and to discuss what policies universities and colleges should consider to be more inclusive. Coding for Kindergarten: Teaching Creativity and Problem Solving Skills to Early Learners
Wednesday, October 8 • 3:00pm – 4:00pm – With so many apps and digital tools marketed to young children, it’s hard to know what kind of experiences children are having when engaging with them. Not all apps are created equal, and in this webinar we will look at the different affordances of digital playgrounds (and playpens). We will also discuss ScratchJr, a new app designed at Tufts University and MIT to teach programming concepts to K-2nd grade students. Digital Citizenship in an iPad Classroom

Free Online Concert for K-5 Students Nationwide – ‘World Communities Concert’
Friday, October 10 • 1:15pm – 2:15pm – You and your class are formally invited to join performer and teaching artist Dave Ruch on Friday, October 10 at 1:15pm eastern time for a live, interactive concert that’s being broadcast nationwide from Dave’s home studio in Buffalo NY.
The program is called “World Communities Concert”, and features songs, musical instruments and stories from all over the world. Geared especially for grades K-5, this program is simple to access and requires only one thing from you: that your students like to laugh, sing, move, answer questions, and get involved as they learn!
