Volunteer for Junior Achievement: Junior Achievement is seeking volunteers for Fall 2015 at Pleasant Valley Junior High.  If you are not familiar with the role our volunteers play in Junior Achievement, volunteers from the community help students connect the JA curriculum to real-life experiences.  Typically, our volunteers commit to teaching 5-7 classes that are 30-45 minutes long.  They can work with the teachers to determine how often they want to have the class (normally 1 per week).  We provide you with all the classroom materials at no cost, and they include step-by-step instructions on how to teach each lesson.  Volunteers may work alone or in pairs.  First-time volunteers will complete a 1 hour training session before entering the classroom.  Want a sneak peak of what’s it like to be in the classroom as a JA Classroom Volunteer?  Watch this video. Contact Kim McMahill at kim.mcmahill@ja.org to volunteer!

Family Meeting Kick off Assembly:  Bridgeview plans to “kick off” our first family meeting (mixed groups of students from different grade levels) with an all school assembly on Monday, September 28th at 2:30.  The theme for the assembly and the year is “Let’s Make it an Awesome Year”.  Part of being awesome means being a Bridgeview student of good character.  At the assembly, to celebrate the pillars of character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship), each grade level is asked to try and wear a particular color to represent the color of that pillar:

K/1 – Red (Caring)

2-Orange (Fairness)

3-Green (Responsibility)

4-Blue (Trustworthiness)

5-Yellow (Respect)

6 – Purple (Citizenship)

If possible, please help your child choose a shirt or sweatshirt, appropriate to their grade level pillar.

Bridgeview and Beyond:  Our first round of Bridgeview and Beyond is quickly approaching. We are looking for volunteers to help with a class or to teach one. If you have an idea, great, but if you don’t we have some here! Some ideas of classes we have done are book clubs, crafts, exercising, board games, scavenger hunts, flip books, jewelry making, yoga, and drama. Illness during the school day:  We are mandated by the state to report various symptoms on a weekly basis to the Scott County Health Department.  Therefore, each student must report to the school nurse before being released from school.  It is one of the jobs of the health office to ensure students are attending class.  Many complaints can be addressed at school. If your student contacts you during the school hours wanting to go home because they are not feeling well, please direct them to the nurse for evaluation.  The nurse will contact you if more action is needed on your part regarding their complaint or if the issue cannot be resolved and the nurse deems it necessary for your student to leave for the day.  Our focus is on the students’ health and academic success.  Please contact the nurse with any concerns regarding your student’s health.

Summer 2016 Washington, D.C. Trip: Spots for the Washington, D.C. trip are filling up fast!  If you plan to sign your child up for the trip, you are encouraged to do so soon in order to secure your spot.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Sarah Larsen at larsensarah@pleasval.k12.ia.us
