re.play Challenge features a range of free-to-enter competitions on vintage systems.
RetroCollect’s Console Capers
RetroCollect will once again be managing tournaments for retro consoles, a few of which are listed below…

4 Player OutRun 2 Heart Attack
Everyone loves a bit of OutRun 2, but nothing will beat the adrenaline rush of playing local multiplayer. Using four linked Microsoft Xboxes, we’ll be pushing your driving skills and flair to the limit, leaving only the best crossing the finishing line. With limited places on offer, this OutRun 2 competition will be one of the most popular knockout tournaments on offer at Play Expo – so be sure to head down early and secure your seat in the Ferrari.
Marble Madness ‘Play With Your Balls’
With our awful puns out of the way, we’re proud to announce that fans of the arcade classic Marble Madness with have plenty of chances to lose their marbles. We’re taking the decent Sega Master System port of the game with the aim of hosting a score attack challenge. Simply play until your lives run out and prove to the nation that you’re the ultimate high roller!
Guilty Gear X2 – Heaven or Hell?
With I-No on a quest to cause havoc in the world of Guilty Gear X2, only you, the legendary hero of Play Expo can save the day. Taking control of the gorgeous 2D fighter’s survival mode, we’re set to throw absolutely everything at you and leave you questioning your button mashing skills. Or, should you happen to surprise us, you’ll rise to the occasion and claim what’s rightfully yours – the Guilty Gear crown!
Star Fox Super Weekend Challenge 2013
Back in 1993 Nintendo held their very own Star Fox competition using a unique and modified version of the game. The Star Fox Super Weekend Competition, as it was known, offered a short 5 minute window for you to blast through Corneria and the oncoming asteroids with the aim of shooting down the highest of scores. Using a reproduction cartridge of the very same one used two decades ago, we’re reviving this iconic tournament to find the ultimate Arwing pilot – one even Peppy would salute!
Diddy Kong Racing Monkey Mayhem
If our Mario Kart 64 announcement didn’t take your fancy, then we’ve got some monkey business for you! Diddy Kong Racing will also be making a prominent appearance during our retro gaming weekend, allowing you to get your banana-skid on for the fastest time around. While we’re yet to reveal the exact course we’ll be testing you with, now might be a good time to reconnect your neglected Nintendo 64 and get practising.
Dead Or Alive 3 Survival Smash Up
Street Fighter this, Tekken that… where’s the Dead or Alive love? With plenty of jiggle physics to boot, Dead or Alive 3 on the Xbox packs quite a punch – something we’ll want to see from you at Play Expo. Instead of putting you up against your friends and fellow RetroCollectees, the game’s survival mode is set to school you on the laws of fighting. Then again, should you happen to keep your health up and absorb the incoming barrage of beatings, then you’ll be well on your way to winning a prize.
Jr. Pac-Man Gobble ‘em Up
Over time Pac-Man has understandably become one of those titles which retro gamers can dominate with their eyes closed and hands tied. Here at RetroCollect, we don’t make things that easy, so here’s another Play Expo 2013 curveball – Jr. Pac-Man. Using the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man’s younger one’s adventures, it’s time to see if all those years playing Namco’s classic have paid off. Just gobble up everything in sight and stay focused.
Moto GP 3 – Slippery When Wet
And last but not least, the last new arrival in September 10th’s announcements is the devilishly difficult Moto GP 3 challenge we have geared up. Using a wickedly wet track offering next to no traction, this Xbox racer is set to deliver plenty of challenge and competition for both fans of the Xbox and the Motorsport. Just cross the finish line in one piece and hope for the best, or skid trying.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Hill Top Zone Time Attack
Before we get into discussing the best techniques to tackle Dr Robotnik’s many forms, how well do you think you’d do when put under the spotlight and asked to tackle Hill Top Zone 2 in record time? This is exactly what we’ll be asking of you next month, with the hopes of finding the fastest blue hedgehog around. Each and every attempt here will come down to the speediest second, so dust off your Mega Drive, plug in, and get practising.
Mario Kart 64 Time Trials 2013
As not everyone is interested in watching Mario’s rival scorch up the iconic scenery from 1992, we’ve prepared an equally as speedy challenge for the Nintendo fan-boys. Using the famous and much loved Mario Kart 64, we’ll be putting you all to the test to see how far you can push your 150cc kart. Blue shells, red shells or green shells, there are no rules or limitations on how you arrive at the finish line, just get there as quick as possible!
Ikaruga Polarity Clash
You’re not an expert in scrolling shooters until you’ve mastered Ikaruga’s double-sided mayhem. With the Gamecube version set to make an appearance at Play Expo this year, we’re going to put your reflexes to the test by putting you up against the hardest difficulty Treasure’s shooter has to offer. Only the hardcore need apply.
Space High Score Harrier
While we cannot deny that the arcade version of Space Harrier is the definitive one to play, there’s still some charm in its home console ports. At this year’s Play Expo we’re looking to find those who have mastered the art of traversing the Fantasy Zone in Sega’s 8-bit port of the arcade classic for the Master System. Simply take control of the jet-pack and GET READY to rack up a high score!
Donkey Kong Country Challenge
Following its runaway success at Revival 2013, RetroCollect has decided to once again bring to the table its Donkey Kong Country Challenge. Consider yourself to be king of the jungle? We’re setting the stage for you to prove how good your banana munching, rhino riding and barrel blasting skills really are.
Using a reproduction of the Donkey Kong Country: Competition Cartridge, we’ll be granting you a generous 5 minutes to accumulate as many points as possible through any means necessary. You’ll be first thrown into the familiar Jungle Hijinx stage to strut your ape-like antics, shortly before being whisked away to later levels holding the points you desire.
Marvel Vs Capcom 2: New Age of Knockout Chaos
While most of these retro gaming challenges offer the chance to make amends for your gameplay mistakes, our Marvel Vs Capcom 2 Knockout Tournament holds no second place. With a highly competitive bracket and limited places, you’ll need to act fast and chose your heroes wisely if you plan on surviving this bout.
Phoenix ‘Phire’ Power
With plenty of shoot-em-up action on offer over the weekend at Play Expo 2013, we’ve decided to mix things up a little by introducing an oldie into the mix. Phoenix on the Atari 2600 is one shooter you’ll be wrong to underestimate, as deep within the primitive system’s offering is one incredible challenge for the taking.
Warioware Inc Mega Party Games Time Attack Challenge
How quickly can you tackle the twenty different mini games that Wario has in store for you without making careless mistakes? As you work your way through and successfully complete each challenge presented to you, the speed will be increased – something which is both a blessing and a curse. Difficulty aside, RetroCollect cannot be held responsible for destroying your gaming confidence.
Sonic The Hedgehog: Robotnik’s Showdown
Due to popular demand, we’re going back to a tried and tested RetroCollect event favourite by bringing back our2011 Robotnik Wreckage Challenge (under a new name). Those who have previously viewed our list of the Top 5 Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Mega Drive ROM hacks around or even visited us as previous retro gaming events, will most likely be familiar (and ready for action) with what this upcoming challenge entails.
Using the incredible time attack themed Sonic the Hedgehog 1 @ SAGE 2010 ROM hack, we will be looking for gamers to grasp the Mega Drive’s control pad tightly and destroy all six of Dr Robotnik’s inventions from the first game, one after the other (with not a single ring in your possession). This Boss Rush Attack Mode is much more difficult than it sounds, especially when the troublesome spike-infested Labyrinth Zone is brought into the equation.
RetroCollect 16-Bit World Championships
And last but not least, another crowd-pleaser is set to return to RetroCollect’s plans at Play Expo 2013. Similar to last year, we will proudly be using a reproduction cartridge of the Super Nintendo Campus Challenge 1992 in hopes of finding the mightiest retro gamer in Manchester during the weekend. You’ll be tasked with tackling three 16-bit classics on the Super Nintendo – Super Mario World, F-Zero and Pilotwings – with just enough time to rack up (what we hope is) a record high score.
Amibay Computer Challenges
Our good buddies at Amibay will be looking after the retro computer side of things and you can expect some great challenges. Games included are…
Sensible World of Soccer
Stunt Car Racer
Doom
Dynablaster
AmiBay (www.amibay.com) is a non-profit site and community who provide a free and easy way to buy or sell your retro hardware and software.
