What is your typical day like?
I have two wonderful young children, so my day always starts early, normally around 5:30 AM. My husband and I have our usual morning routine, and once the children are off to school, my workday begins.
Normally, I like to start off the morning with a healthy homemade smoothie. I then review the day and meetings ahead. I check the to-do lists for all my clients and begin the research that needs to be completed.
My afternoons are mainly spent in meetings with clients and vendors, doing things such as touring venues, going over budgets, selecting linens, and attending tastings.
How did you get started in the industry?
While in university, I worked in the hotel industry for 6 years. During that time, I learned a lot about customer service. I got started in the wedding industry after I took a wedding planning course. My husband had encouraged me to look into event planning because he could see how much I enjoyed it.
I always loved planning parties! There was something just so special about creating memories. Prior to wedding planning, I trained at the University of Alberta in Education, specializing in theatre production. My years of teaching and directing greatly helped me as a Wedding Planner. As a teacher, I learned how to be organized, and how to effectively plan daily, weekly, and yearly timelines with set goals in place. As a director, I learned the various elements of set, design and lighting. It all comes together to tell a story.
This is the reasoning behind the company name – “Story Weddings & Events”.
Where do you find design inspiration?
I find much inspiration through artwork, traveling, music, and interior design. My weddings are inspired mainly through listening carefully to my clients. Story Weddings & Events’ weddings are unique in that each wedding reflects the couple’s personality and their love story, so no two weddings will look similar. I also subscribe to several wedding blogs.
What are your favorite online resources for your business?
The Planners Lounge is definitely one of my favorite websites to frequent. I also enjoy Style Me Pretty, The Every Last Detail, YEG Wed, Wedding Bells, The Knot, and Champagne Sweets, just to name a few.
