Service on major websites was down in areas on the East Coast on Friday.

Hackers attacked Dyn, which routes internet users to websites, with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. Domain Name Servers like DYN convert the domain names of websites into IP addresses computers can understand.

It was fully restored at 9:36 a.m., according to a statement from Dyn. The server issued the following statement early Friday:

Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.
