Ruby is now fully transitioned to a freeze-dried raw diet. Although I feared this transition might take months, in reality it only took a few weeks. She made the transition smoothly and easily and had no incidents of intestinal distress that often results from food change.
The folks at Primal were very helpful and in addition to the food provided us with recommendations and guidance. I followed their advice and started with one half nugget mixed with a serving of her old food. She did well with no adverse effects so after a few days I increased the ratio to 1.5 nuggets mixed with a half serving of her old food. Within a few weeks, we eliminated the kibble all together and she now gets three nuggets in the morning and three in the evening. She seems very satisfied with this amount and is far less interested in snacking between meals.

As a side note, our cats seem very interested in Ruby’s new food. Ruby used to be kind of obsessed with cat food and would help herself any chance she could get. The tables have now turned – Ruby shows no interest in cat food, but the cats are fascinated with her new food. We are now beginning to transition the cats to Primal as well!
Ruby has definitely slimmed down and toned up since starting her new diet. Little dogs are prone to weight gain and all the diseases that result from it. We battled Pip’s weight for years and were determined not to make the same mistakes with Ruby. Like Pip, Ruby’s earlier years were rough and she probably didn’t have the best nutrition or care. By choosing a nutritionally dense, high quality diet for Ruby, we hope to make up for some of her early years of neglect.

Most exciting is her increase in energy and new zest for life – maybe I am reaching here a bit, but she genuinely seems to feel better. We go for longer, more vigorous walks and she is more engaged in actively exploring her surroundings and just doing dog things. She also seems to feel more comfortable around new people, dogs, and situations. While these changes may not be directly related to her diet change, I believe physical and emotional wellbeing are connected. She has more energy and feels physically stronger and that is reflected in her emotional life as well.
