Partners Natalie Miller & Ben Nothling launched leather beaded flip flops and belts in 2002, calling their label holster and by 2006 holster transitioned to jelly style footwear. This a comfortable and stylish alternative can be worn by day to the beach, out to lunch or a day of shopping and yet these styles can easily make for stylish evening footwear. holster jellies range from flats, sandals, wedges and espadrilles and contain stunning features from jewels to shells, studs and even Swarovski crystals. Fast forward 7 year and holster is now stocked in in over 2,200 stores worldwide. Wowzers! holster has just appointed Dannii Minogue as the face of its latest collection, Rockstar. The sky is the limit for these two!
We had a quick chat with Natalie to discuss holster and its collaboration with the divine Miss D...
Congratulations on the success of holster! What made you venture in to designing footwear? On holiday in Bali we were inspired by the opportunity to offer great value accessories that were in local demand. At the time shell belts were an incredibly hot fashion item, especially in Queensland. Whilst belts disappeared in popularity, we identified a unique opportunity within the shoe category.With Ben’s talent for business and my passion for design, we produced a range of jelly sandals that no other Australian company had embraced as a concept at that time. I wanted to design the perfect pair of shoes that would take me stylishly (yet comfortably) anywhere I wanted to go. holster offers a versatile lifestyle solution… from dusk to dawn all summer long.
How important is comfortable footwear to you? No matter how beautiful a shoe style is, if it’s not comfortable I just can’t wear it. I really wanted to make sure that a holster shoe did not just look good on the foot but felt good as you wear it. The holster team work very hard behind the scenes in the product development stages to ensure the shoe fit is as perfect as possible for the average foot shape. We also add extra features like arch support to our out-soles to make sure they offer enhanced foot support.
Impressive. Dannii Minogue is the face of your SS13 campaign!! How did this amazing collaboration start? We are beyond excited to have Dannii Minogue on board as the face of our Rockstar jelly collection this season. Dannii has been a fan of the brand for about 5 years now and with her style icon status it seemed only natural to create a jelly style that Dannii loves and could put her name on.
Dannii looks amazing in the campaign! How has it been working with Miss D? It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Dannii who really went above and beyond at the recent
photo shoot. She is a beautiful, intelligent, strong, funny, down-to-earth woman who is the perfect
person to represent the Rockstar collection.
Aside from Dannii, which celebrities have been snapped wearing holster styles? Some other celebs that have been spotted wearing holster include: Kylie Minogue, Katie Price, Mel
B, Kristy Hinze, Layne Beachley, Shelley Craft and Rachael Finch.
What makes holster shoes different from other footwear labels? Our brands objective is to make the best jelly sandals in the world so we do everything in our power to keep improving our footwear each season. I believe it is our attention to detail and stylish designs that keep us one step ahead of our competitors. We constantly create new innovative concepts and infuse them into our footwear which means holster is going where no brand has been before in the jelly footwear arena.
In a few words, how would you describe the holster consumer? Fashionable, fun & down-to-earth.
When you design a new collection, where do you turn for inspiration? My main inspiration is Mother Nature. I love being outdoors, smelling fresh air, seeing the sun shine through the trees and looking out to the ocean from a sandy beach. I am obsessed with tropical islands and think you can’t beat that feeling when you are carefree on an island getaway so I design footwear that will compliment this kind of dreamy location. Also being lucky enough to live in Noosa Beach my whole life means I am constantly getting little bursts of inspiration.
Which do you prefer ... flats or heels? I have long legs so I am a flats girl.
Which do you prefer ... comfort or style? Both. That’s what we aim to create at holster - the ultimate footwear package.
What makes you feel Spoilt? A kiss from my gorgeous 2 year old son makes me feel very Spoilt indeed ... or a new pair of shoes of course!
