Patreon is still a scummy thing to do, and it is true that many artists who don’t deserve it and don’t really work hard on their art somehow get paid lots by others who want to see more of that bland, boring, low quality artwork they’ve seen years ago already… And who the fuck does that anyhow? i mean, “HEY PAY THIS RANDOM ARTIST TO HAVE THEM MAKE THIS THING FOR ME”…. How does that work?

Patreon artists get the support that they get cause people like the art that they produce, or they like the artist and want to throw a few bucks their way. Sorry if that concept makes you pissy.
Because of Patreon, I’m able to pay off my student loans each month, and the rest of my bills without breaking myself doing so. It gives me a little breathing room to do stuff that I would like to do, but never had the time to do so because I was always bogged down doing artwork for other people.
What I find most disappointing is that people think I’m putting ALL of my art behind a “paywall”, when I’m not. I still post plenty of art for free, the problem is with people that think everything should be posted for free wants EVERYTHING for free. I even tried to come up with a few solutions to make Patreon postings less irritating by posting the lineart to the general public for free; still got tons of bitching from that. So why should I bend over backwards for people that don’t even care?

In fact. if i did need to state the ovbious, i made an experiment: this picture, as half assed as it is. has made in less than a day what other pictures i’ve drawn more than a year ago and were much better technically executed. So i’d say you’re much more popular than i would be. actually.
You know, i set up a patreon where i’d publish stuff and offer exclusive works and privilege over commissioning. Over three months, i did got nothing but insults and other bullshit being told about my campaign. even if it was empty, as noone backed me up to fill that up. lol. So i had to close that shit down, because funnily enough, people did not want nor to support me for the artwork i was making and enjoying making, nor wanted to hire me to draw something for them. All they wanted was fucking porn.
You speak of paying your student loans, and that’s nice and all, but again, at the end it’s all a matter of luck and exploiting basic human conditions.
Now, back the the point of the original post, out of which you’ve sent your minions to spam my inbox over.
99% of the patreon userbase, is not people who offer bonuses or do new art or whatever. It is artists who close down their galleries and then ACTUALLY force people to pay to see artwork that has been already made, word by word what i said back on the first post. Most of these guys just do jack shit, just exploit their fame and do little to no new work while getting paid by people who want to look at pictures that used to be freely available.
But hey, if you are to carry on with that, go ahead, keep sending your minions to insult me and my life issues and then say that’s why i don’t like patreon, i don’t like patreon for the users, and i hate the patrons for their stupid reasons individually. If having people calling the corporation regarding somebody else’s artwork is not being popular, then i do not know what it is. I do not. My concerns come from people who do absolutely nothing and get paid for it, offering little to no content, or those who remove their previous artwork and make it available under a paywall. New artwork being exclusive makes sense, it’s still a cheap move, but it’s a cheap move that it’s understandable. Offering a pay what you want method for image bundles, and then having a Patreon account so fans can actually give support to that artist, and in turn those fans will get exclusive, tangential content that does not affect the main production, is what should be done, and that’s what patreon was designed for. Not the former.

Funnily enough. as an artist, my happiest period has been from 2013 until the present day. Where i stopped giving a fuck about the fanbase i had ( more like people who wanted free porn ), and started doing my own thing, working only on what i felt like working on, being completely ignored by the world. I seek no admiration. I only seek fairness and that other individuals start treating their fellow artists and fans fairly as well.

People need to stop arguing over others who have a patreon or who have successful donation drives/tip jars/what-have-you.
The fact of the matter is - these people managed to make the system work in their favor, rather than crash, burn and then starting to throw salt at their “competition”.
The majority of these people have betrayed the people who drove them to the point where they are. However, it is clear from that very sentence, we are not here to treat everyone as humans and play fairly, we are here to exploit the system and cannibalize eachother. Something that i should have seen coming from your art.

Go to dA, FA, and Weasyl. Pick 10 random artists. 9 of those artists will be offering a patreon where old artwork can be found, and the new artwork will be found as well, leaving nothing but a publicity wall on their galleries with cropped up pictures and a patreon logo on top, saying that if you want to see that submission, old or new, you got to go to patreon. The other one will most likely be a comic artist who will draw one-offs and other bonus material for their backers, while keeping the normal schedule for those who cannot pay.
The system works in the way that artists should STILL do what they regularly have been doing, like they’ve been doing it, with the incentives on patreon being there for those who donate, so they can get the usual stuff AND MORE, that is how patreon should work. not by moving your regular art production over there and giving the large majority of your followers cropped down, watermarked and incomplete versions of the artwork, that depiste their promises of updating after 2 weeks it’s been on patreon, it never will happen. But then. You’re essentially saying people should be soulless scumbags who are there to exploit everything and everyone.
On the other side you have people who work as they normally would and post their art freely, and merely offer alternative versions of said art, be it different clothing setups, nude/revealing or colored/high-res versions or even PSD / step-by-step progress pieces or perhaps the actual drawing process being recorded as a video file for those interested - as patron rewards; potentially putting extra bonus content such as contests, crowd-funded raffles that even non-paying people can participate in, etcetera, as milestone goals.
That, my dear, is that random loner from the experiment done earlier.
There are very few people using Patreon who post their art exclusively there, simply because - without exposure - any patreon would quickly perish as people only leave, but no new people join to pledge. You always need at least something to lure people in.
And that’s the vast majority of the users. you got your scenarios confused.
Moving on to the second point - “fanart piece gets more views/likes/favorites than my original work”…
This is a no-brainer, really, and I am surprised this got even mentioned. Fan-Art will ALWAYS get you more views, quicker and more easily than any original work, especially on a site such as DeviantART, where the moment you add “my little pony”, “sonic the hedgehog” or “steven universe” into your tags, the picture will show up in the search results of MILLIONS of people. every. single. day. Doesn’t matter how skilled you are, how amazing you may draw/paint/model - if nobody knows you, you’re essentially not even there.
Again, let’s go back to the point of work ethics, doing what one wants to do and not need to be slave of people forcing you to draw what they want, and not what you want. That’s not becoming popular or renowned or becoming a name. It’s selling your soul and artistic integrity.
While I know they exist, there simply aren’t that many people out there who will search the tag “oc” or “original character”; and if you don’t tag your art properly with everything that is part of it, which people might search for (eg: long hair, short hair, pigtails, mini-skirt, gym pants, large breasts, stockings, nekomimi, zettai ryouiki), you cheat yourself out of views. Your art will be on the front-page for about 2-5 seconds at best, and then it’s being swallowed by the rest of DA / FA / Weasyl / Inkbunny / pixiv / etc.
Fair point here, and even so, it is still helpless, as as soon as people will look at a piece of fan art on the gallery, they’ll instantly forget about the art that got them on that gallery on the first place as a result from their search. ( does not help having 300 people nagging you whenever you make a regular picture because it is not fan art either )
So, play the system. Draw Fanart. Lots of it. Get in new followers by drawing things THEY like. You’re pandering, sure, but you’ll want to do that if you want that exposure and get more well-known. And every now and then, draw some of your own characters or ideas. The people that now follow you might actually like the stuff you do for yourself, and stick around for that, too - hell, they may even try to commission you to draw their ideas. It’s how it works.
I know, I did this myself, and while I am far from being a popular or even highly-skilled artist, I managed to get from barely 500 tumblr followers to 8500+ in under 2 years.
Like i said before, i’ve been doing that for years, 4 to be exact. People gave no shits about anything that was fan art, of the fappeable kind. People just don’t fucking care. 4 years. 389 followers ( and about 140 on Tumblr. 100 of them are spam bot, 13 know me personally and the rest are here to see me explode on rants like these ), zero fucks given. Why should anyone bother drawing anything for anyone if that is all what they want, and they disrepsect you and literally insult you when you don’t give them what they expect you to do, saying quote on quote, that what happens to me personally is because i do not do porn? ( that’s easily traceable to some journal where i was asking about commissions, or probably it was the patreon one, anyhow it’s traceable, as i don’t hide anything ) If anything, it makes you want to draw the least amount of fanart as humanly concievable. As people like these ( the majority of my followers ) deserve jack shit.
