Cameraperson
Cameraperson, cinematographer Kirsten Johnson’s documentary about her life in film, received the 2016 Grand Jury Award at the Sheffield Doc/Fest. Johnson has worked on politically engaged films such as Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11and Citizenfour, Laura Poitras’ film about whistleblower Edward Snowden.
The grand jury at the annual international documentary festival also gave a special mention to The Settlers, Shimon Dotan's documentary about Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
The Chilean short about Alzheimer’s, I'm Not From Here, was awarded the Short Doc Award, which means that it qualifies for the 2017 Academy Awards.
There were also accolades for an interactive, multi-media experience based around the film Notes on Blindness, a film that explores the experiences of British academic John Hull as he loses his sight. Hull documented his reations to blindness on audio-cassettes, which filmmakers James Spinney and Peter Middleton used as the basis of the documentary.
Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness, a parallel VR project, was presented as part of the VR exhibition at the Site Gallery. It won both the Alternate Realities Award and theStorytelling and Innovation Award, a prize supported by Wellcome Trust that celebrates compelling stories inspired by science, research and collaborations.
Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary Films, received the Sheffield Doc/Fest Creative Leadership Award, which is given to an individual who has made an essential contribution to the international documentary industry, has created or produced creative and impactful documentary work and has provided inspiration and leadership to the field.
Festival director Liz McIntyre said: “This has been an extraordinary year of brilliant creativity and originality with an awe-inspiring display of talent, both home grown and from around the world.”
