Babinda in a quaint small city in far north Queensland, solely to the south of Cairns. It's a sugar town in the heart of north Queensland and neighbors use either Innifail or Cairns as their major service centre. The Bruce Highway no longer runs through Babinda so you'll need to turn off the road to visit. With only 1000 or so people, Babinda isn't a large place, however it is spread out and has the majority of the necessary conveniences, like a supermarket, chemist, schools, bakery, bar hardware store for example. Babinda is a really wet place and you'd be smart to keep an umbrella convenient. Every year the prize for Australia’s wettest town, the Golden Gumboot Award, is hotly contested by Babinda and Tully. Babinda usually wins. The neighbors don’t seem to care the rain though and it's often visitors and incomers who find it a bit pointless at certain times.
7 kilometres to the west of Babinda you will find the Babinda Boulders, which is an incredibly well-liked swimming hole for locals and visitors alike. Even in summer, the water is agreeably cool. The water for Babinda Creek comes from the mountains behind and has done so for thousands of years, cascading down the mountain over the boulders in Babinda Stream, constantly smoothing their surface.
The Boulders can be threatening during times of very high rainfall, thanks to the amount of water rushing down the mountain, and many unsuspecting visitors (and neighbors) have been caught unawares on the incorrect side of the stream. Babinda is a pretty place with a lot of examples of old Queensland architecture, eg the Infirmary, Post Office and State Hotel, as well as many old Queensland style homes. Drop in and visit on the way through to Cairns.
