March 29th, 2014….Back in 2010, we heard that Paul Thomas Anderson was attached to direct a film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s book Inherent Vice, a kidnapping mystery about a pot-smoking private eye that takes place in 1969 Los Angeles. Robert Downey Jr. was attached to star, and Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison came through with funding, but Anderson ended up doing The Master first.

Now that his time with Freddie Quell and Lancaster Dodd has come to an end, Inherent Vice is next on PTA’s directing slate, and a new report from Showbiz 411 says that Charlize Theron (among others) could be coming along for the trippy ride. Downey will play a stoner detective named Doc Sportello, and while there’s no official word on who Theron would play as of yet, I’m guessing she’ll be asexy private eye working with Downey.

Charlize Theron has played detectives in the past, such as one part that would come her way was in Hollywood Confidential, intended to be a TV series where ex-cop Edward James Olmos would run a private detective agency (the Hollywood Confidential of the title) operating in LA’s seamy underground.

The pilot would see embezzlement in a strip club and a famous director trying to get rid of his pregnant and much younger girlfriend, the major point being to introduce Olmos and his crack team, including Charlize and Thomas Jane in one of his earlier roles. Charlize Theron would play the very sexy Sally Bowen, who goes undercover at the strip club, gets nabbed by her bartender suspect and badly beaten up.
