PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) — Police in Florida are searching for a Troy New York man wanted on child sex charges a day after they briefly detained and released him due to procedural delays. Pinellas Park police say authorities in Troy, N.Y., contacted them regarding 25-year-old Jesse Sawyer Jr., who is accused of raping three young girls and then posing in pictures with them earlier this month. Sgt. Adam Geissenberger says officers made contact with Sawyer at an address in Pinellas Park, near St. Petersburg. Sawyer was “cooperative” while police contacted the FBI to confirm the arrest warrant. But after an hour passed with no confirmation, they let Sawyer go. A short time later, the FBI confirmed the warrant. But it was too late. When police returned to the location, Sawyer was gone. Jesse Sawyer Jr., 25, is 5-foot-8, weighs about 160 pounds and has brown hair and hazel eyes. He is also charged with making a video of the rape of one of the girls, child porn.
Press Release: The Pinellas Park Police Department received information on Jesse Sawyer’s whereabouts just before 11 p.m. Thursday March 27th 2014. They found him at 8900 US Highway 19, the address of Calvary Chapel an outreach for the homeless,and said he was cooperative with the investigation. Having learned there was a warrant out for his arrest, the Florida department began confirmation procedures with the FBI. “We did not receive a response from the FBI in reference to this request so telephone contact was established,” according to the press release. “The person we spoke to at the FBI could not confirm the warrant and was making telephone calls to an unidentified agent to confirm this. An hour had passed from the time we initiated contact with Sawyer and we had no received warrant confirmation. It was decided that the suspect would be released from the scene due to not receiving a hit confirmation.” The department went on to clarify that Sawyer had been detained and was not in custody, and that he did not escape from police and did not climb out a window to escape. A short while later confirmation was received, at which point officers returned to the area and learned Sawyer was gone. A sheriff’s office helicopter and K-9 teams searched the area but were unable to locate him. Sawyer is accused of raping three girls, age 6 and the others each 5. He’s also accused of taking pictures of the encounters. Troy police enlisted the FBI and other agencies to track down Sawyer.
