Hi there! I wanted to say hello to my new readers, and old ones too! For those of you new to Phyrra, let me tell you a little about my blog. I originally started blogging because I couldn’t find very many mineral foundation makeup reviews, so I wanted to share my experiences with indie mineral makeup. I slowly evolved into trying makeup tutorials, reviews and all sorts of other posts. This blog shows my progression with makeup, improving my skill, as well as with photography.
Now I cover reviews, tutorials, lifestyle, the occasional fashion post, and anything else that strikes my fancy. I also take requests! Just send me an email 
From 1999 until March 2012 I was a MAC fan. That’s when I found out that MAC was selling in China and no longer cruelty free. Many other brands came out along that time as selling in China, such as Smashbox, Avon etc. That was really my catalyst into writing a letter to MAC (they never responded) and deciding I would only buy cruelty free.
It also led to me research what cruelty free means and what brands I would support. I choose to support cruelty free brands who are not selling in China, even if they have a parent company that is not cruelty free. I would not want to be blamed for the actions of my parents, as I’m a separate entity. This means that I support brands such as Urban Decay, NARS, Tom’s of Maine, the Body Shop, Bath & Body Works, bareMinerals, Buxom, Burt’s Bees and Victoria’s Secret.
If a brand is not cruelty free but decides to go cruelty free, I will support them! I want brands to stop testing on animals.
I have products from MAC and other brands, such as Make Up For Ever that were purchased before I went cruelty free on my blog. I’m using these products up but I won’t repurchase them unless they become cruelty free. I have also had brands tell me that they were cruelty free only for me to later find out they are not. When that happens I share it on my blog (such as with Laura Mercier).
I use sites such as Paula’s Choice, Leaping Bunny, PETA, NAVS, My Beauty Bunny and Logical Harmony to research brands. I also reach out to brands directly to find out about their cruelty free status. When brands contact me, I ask them the following questions ‘Is your brand cruelty free? Are you selling in China?’ I always look for the dreaded “Our brand does not conduct animal testing, nor ask others to do it on its behalf, except when it is required by law.” That ‘except when it is required by law’ typically means China. However, there are exceptions to that! You can sell in Hong Kong, but nowhere else in China, and still be cruelty free because Hong Kong is exempt from testing.

I also highly recommend emailing brands. Sometimes they might surprise you.
Recently I went to sign up for Ipsy and I made sure to only select cruelty free brands during the sign up. However, I didn’t see a box to tick off for cruelty free only, so I contacted customer support. They sent me this response back:
Thanks for your interest in our Glam Bags! We really commend your decision to live a cruelty-free lifestyle and would love to support you. At this time, we are unable to guarantee that your bag will contain only cruelty-free products. Many of our brand partners do make only vegan or cruelty-free products, so you should receive some products you can use in every Glam Bag, but we can’t guarantee that all of the products will be vegan or cruelty-free every month. We really appreciate your feedback because it helps us know what kinds of Bags to create in the future. If we have enough demand for a vegan bag every month, we’ll do our best to make it happen.
So I cancelled my signup, but it encouraged me to share that they want people to email them to ask for cruelty free. I often feel like, if just enough people would email a company, they might consider a change.
