Can’t get that perfect photo of your pet? Try these 5 tips on how to succeed.

Let’s face it: pets don’t always cooperate the best. If you’ve ever tried photographing your furry (or not so furry) friend, you’ll know it can sometimes be next to impossible. Guess what? It doesn’t have to be! Just following a few steps could show you how to turn blurry furballs into professional-looking photos that you will be proud to display.

Don’t use the flash!

Many pets naturally have large, shiny eyes that don’t mix well with the sudden brightness of the flash. Turning off your flash will most likely eliminate any issues you’re having with red eyes in your beautiful photos. Instead, try taking your pet out on a nice, sunny day to get amazing natural light and to provide you and your pet with a little fun during the process.

Use a quick shutter speed

Pets move all over the place and rarely stand still. Using a faster shutter speed will make it more likely for you to get that perfect photo under your belt.

Keep your pet interested in you

Many animals like to wander, which doesn’t help out any photographer. Try using treats or toys to keep them in the area you would like. Talking to them may also help keep them focused on you and not the kids across the street.

Try every angle

For pets, it’s usually best to get on their level. Don’t limit yourself though! Your dog looking up at you with big puppy dog eyes or a shot taken with you laying on the ground might end up being one of your favorite photos.

Distract them from the camera

This one sounds a little odd, but pets can grow tired of cameras being pointed at them pretty easily. Some pets just don’t like the constant, staring attention cameras bring. Try avoiding this by being less stationary. Even just leaning down or moving around to play will to make the animal less nervous. This will also create photos that are less posed and more playful.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you stay patient and don’t get frustrated. After all, your pet has no idea what you’re trying to do. If you can keep it cool, eventually you’ll be able to get some photos you can look forward to showing off.
