Editor’s Note: Each week we’ll be featuring members of the Photofocus community.  Part of our New Year’s resolution is to focus on new and emerging talent.  As such, Melissa Niu will personally select images from our readers and feature them here on Photofocus.

“Tree of Disbelief” is part of a series of portraiture images that explore the connection between nature and humans, using surreal concepts and symbols. I wanted to remove anything about the modern world and focus on nature and wonders such as metamorphosis, as if the observer was visiting a Wunderkammer. I took this during the golden hour, while the sun was setting down and the light was warm. I wanted this particular condition to be part of the photo to give it more “magic”. I used several different layers to create the metamorphosis effect.

I am a fine art photographer with a fascination for dreamlike and surreal atmospheres. I am inspired by Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist painters, and currently working on a series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, “Visions of Poe”.
