I was talking to my dad this morning. As the conversation typically goes, he asked what I have been up to lately and how business is going. I told him I have a house in escrow for a couple that are relocating to the Phoenix Metro area and that it had been a hard process to try to pinpoint an area to live that would work for them since most people don’t realize just how big the Phoenix Metro area truly is.
My dad has visited Arizona many times. He knows that Phoenix metro area covers a lot of ground, that it has grown considerably in recent years, but he had no idea just how wide of an area I was talking about. I explained to him that when we say “the Phoenix Metro Area” we are typically referring to Maricopa County since that is where the majority of the “Phoenix” population lives. Even though everywhere the buyers had interested in looking was located in Maricopa County, it required a lot of driving and several days of looking to see everything while they were here. We initially started their home search in the Southeast Valley, the Agritopia subdivision in Gilbert. They wanted to see Goodyear and Surprise in the West Valley next. They have friends that live in Anthem, so they drove out there to take a look around, and then decided it was too far north from central Phoenix. In the end, they purchased a new build in North Phoenix in the Norterra subdivision which is north of the 101 and East of the I-17 freeways.
The conversation peaked my curiosity. Just how big is Maricopa County? I googled it and found:
Maricopa County, AZ is 9,224 square miles. Yeah, um, pretty freaking HUGE with a lot of places and miles to cover.
According to the estimated 2012 census the population is 3,942,169 up from 3,817,117 in April 2010 or 3.3%.
Maricopa County includes the following towns and cities: Avondale, Buckeye, Carefree, Cave Creek, Chandler, El Mirage, Fountain Hills, Gila Bend, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Guadalupe, Litchfield Park, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Phoenix, parts of Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Surprise, Tempe, Tolleson, parts of Wickenburg and Youngtown.
