2016-11-16

Now here’s a group with a high-profile task normally cloaked in anonymity but which is anything but now.

Ultimately, they are not anonymous and this is a wonderful thing about the American system of Presidential elections. The electoral college serves many “stabilizing” and self-regulating functions when Americans choose their President every 4 years, despite what shrill hags like Barbara Boxer may think. One crucial aspect about the electors who carry out the will of their respective state’s voters is that their identity is public and transparent. The electoral college is not a mysterious cabal of shadowy figures who meets in secrecy; their identities are available for those who seek.

Thing is, usually Presidential elections are not as “jittery” as the 2016 one has been, and will be.   The electors have now assumed a very visible role in this circus.

In 2016, the electors find themselves in an unusual position: the spotlight.

Normally they have a job to do and are able to do it with nary a raised eyebrow, but not this Winter, when on December 19, they congregate in rooms across the nation to cast their vote which, in theory, should reflect the assigned will of the voters.

Today, these people find they are political celebrities.

On one side, they have sobbing, hashtag-wielding hipsters, on the other, angry, 2nd Amendment toting alt-righters. Not an enviable position.
