St. Joseph’s redshirt junior attackman Ryan McGee (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) has been named the Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. This marks the second consecutive NEC Player of the Week award for Saint Joseph’s and the first for McGee.
In a 1-1 week, McGee boasted hat tricks in back-to-back games to average 4.5 points per game on 3.0 goals per game and 1.25 assists per game. SJU’s scoring leader tallied three of the Hawks’ four total goals – all in the first period – against #20 Penn and assisted on SJU’s final goal of the game to average a point on each of SJU’s four scoring plays. On Saturday, McGee again tallied three goals and assisted on two to post five points to lead SJU to its first NEC victory in a 12-8 win over Wagner. In the two games combined, McGee fired off 22 shots, with nine landing on goal, and recorded five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Penn’s Brown wins Ivy Rookie of Week
The Ivy League has announced its weekly award winners in men’s lacrosse, and University of Pennsylvania freshman attackman Kevin Brown has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Brown earned his first weekly Ivy honor after recording a hat trick as Penn defeated then-No. 6 Denver, 12-10, Saturday at Franklin Field. Earlier in the week, he was one of 12 different goalscorers as the Quakers routed local rival Saint Joseph’s, 14-4. For the season, Brown is tied for the team lead with five goals and has scored at least once in all three of the Quakers’ contests.
Penn, which is 2-1 and ranked 14th in this week’s USILA national coaches poll, is at Villanova on Saturday. That game will face off at 5 p.m. and be televised live on Fox College Sports.
Maryland’s Amato (La Salle) earns ACC honors
Following a win at top-ranked Duke, Maryland senior goalkeeper Niko Amato earned his second straight Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.
Amato was the difference in the Terps’ 10-6 win over the top-ranked Blue Devils, turning in a season-high 17-save performance. The senior made four of his saves in the third quarter when Duke managed just five shots. He was the anchor of the defensive effort that saw Maryland hold the Blue Devils scoreless for a stretch of 26:26 from the 7:58 mark of the second quarter to 14:17 of the fourth. Overall, Amato and the Terrapin defense allowed just one Blue Devil goal over the game’s final 37:58. With his 17-save performance Amato also became just the third goalie in Maryland history to reach the 500-save mark for his career. Amato now stands at 516 saves
Delaware’s Peaks is CAA Player of Week
Thanks to a superb effort between the pipes in the University of Delaware’s 11-9 victory over rival Villanova Saturday, Blue Hen men’s lacrosse goalkeeper Conor Peaks has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week.
Peaks, a sophomore goalkeeper from Ponte Vedra, Fla. (Ponte Vedra High School), played a key role as Delaware (3-2) won its second straight game and posted its most significant victory of the season. He allowed nine goals and recorded a career-high 16 saves, including two in the final two minutes to help Delaware preserve the win. He faced 43 Villanova shots on the day and allowed just six goals heading into the final stanza.
After five games this season, Peaks has allowed 37 goals for a 7.80 goals against average and has recorded 58 saves for a .611 save percentage. He ranks No. 12 nationally in save percentage and No. 18 in goals against average and ranks No. 2 in the CAA.
Loyola’s Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep) wins Patriot honor
Loyola attacker Nikko Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep) has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after the Greyhounds defeated then-No. 14 Lehigh University, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon.
Pontrello earned his honor for the second week in a row. Pontrello recorded his fifth multi-point outing in as many games this year and his fourth in a row with three or more goals. The junior attacker scored four goals, all in the first half, including three in a row during a second quarter that saw Loyola outscore the Mountain Hawks, 4-0. He has scored 19 goals this season, already eclipsing his previous seasonal best of 16 from last year. His 3.8 goals per game are best in the Patriot League and fifth in the NCAA.

Notched four points on the week. Scored the overtime game-winner in Tuesday’s 11-10 comeback win over No. 15 Drexel and added two assists in Saturday’s 11-9 loss to Delaware.
Scranton’s Sturm (Conestoga), Finor (CR South) earn honors
Junior midfielder Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) had a big role in The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team’s first victory of the season. As a result, he has been named the Landmark Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.
Finor won 15 of the 20 faceoffs he took in the Royals’ 12-6 victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday, March 1, in Allentown, Pa. Finor won all four faceoffs in the first period as Scranton took a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes, then had a string of five straight faceoff wins as the Royals scored six straight times in the fourth period to put the game away.
Finor also scooped up a team-high seven ground balls as Scranton (1-1) outshot Muhlenberg, 38-24, in the victory.
In two games this season, Finor is 23 of 37 on draw controls and has 11 ground balls.
Also, Scranton senior attackman Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) scored three straight goals in the fourth period to help The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team defeat Muhlenberg, 12-6, on Saturday, March 1, in Allentown, Pa. As a result, he has been named the University’s Athlete of the Week.
Sturm’s three goals were part of a six-goal run by the Royals that turned a 6-4 game into a 12-4 Scranton lead. He scored three times in the span of 82 seconds to end the six-goal spurt and put the game away for the Royals, their first victory of the season.
The goals were the first three of the season for Sturm, who took six shots and also collected a ground ball. He now has 24 career goals on 41 career shots on goal.
