Men’s recruits: Defenseman Monticollo (St. Augustine Prep) among Class of 2017 for Loyola

Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse welcomed 15 players to campus Friday, a group of student-athletes that will comprise its Class of 2017 when the Greyhounds take the field in the spring.
Fourteen of the players are first-year players, and one is a transfer with four years of athletic eligibility remaining.
Joining the program are: attackers Matt Cunningham (Exeter, N.H./Deerfield Academy), Jordan Germershausen (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall College), Johnny McNamara (Mansfield, Mass./Brewster Academy), Nick Sawyer (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and Zack Sirico (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville); midfielders Romar Dennis (Huntingtown, Md./St. Mary’s Ryken), Nick DeSisto (Canton, Mass./The Rivers School), Ryan Fournier (Ottawa, Ontario/The Hill Academy), Mike Perkins (Jamesville-Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt), Graham Savio (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Brian Sherlock (Nissequogue, N.Y./St. Anthony’s/North Carolina); long-stick midfielder Ross Schnitzer (Scarsdale, N.Y./Iona Prep); defenders Jack Carrigan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) and Adam Monticollo (Medford, N.J./St. Augustine Prep); and, goalkeeper Sam Beazell (Potomac Falls, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes).
“We are very excited to welcome these young me to campus,” said Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. “They have come from strong high school programs, and we expect continued success at the collegiate level from them.”
Following is a brief look at each of the players:
Adam Monticollo earned USLacrosse All-American honors as a senior in 2013 at Saint Augustine Preparatory School and was also a NJILCA and NJSIAA All-State First Team honoree. He also earned several honors, including All-South Jersey honors from Atlantic City Press, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier Post. He also played in the Champion All-America Challenge, a USLacrosse event after the season. Monticollo was a Top 205 All-Star, as well, and he helped Saint Augustine to three New Jersey Non-Public state titles from 2010-2012.
Sam Beazell was a three-time All-Virginia goalkeeper at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School, earning the honors from 2011-2013. As a senior, he posted a 4.8 goals against average and saved 68-percent of shots on goal that he faced. He led the Saints to back-to-back Virginia state titles in 2012 and 2013 and their first-ever IAC Championship
Jack Carrigan was a key member of Chaminade High School’s 2013 NSCHSAA State AAA Championship team after earning NSCHSAA All-League honors from the coaches. The Flyers also won the league regular-season title, and was a two-year letterwinner for the Chaminade basketball team that also won the league title. Carrigan played club lacrosse for the Long Island Express, and he led the New York City to the 2013 Emipre State Cup title, earning All-Tournament honors in the process.
Matt Cunningham helped Deerfield Academy win the last three Western New England Championships. Cunningham was named to the Western New England All-Star team as a senior in 2013, and he was also a varsity letterwinner in soccer and basketball for the Big Green. Cunninghamn played club lacrosse for Madlax and was a NSCLA All-American in 2012, and he also played on the Reebok National Team.
Romar Dennis earned Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2013 at Saint Mary’s Ryken High School. He also was a 2012 Under Armour Underclass All-American, and he helped the Knights reach the semifinals of the WCAC each of his four years at the school. As a senior, Dennis posted 37 goals and 20 assists, a year after recording 21 and 20. In club lacrosse, Dennis played for Madlax and was a 2011 Top 205 All-Star.
Nick DeSisto was an Under Armour Underlcass All-American in 2012 at The Rivers School, an event at which he earned All-Tournament honors, one of 10 out of more than 250 players. He was also a standout at the Champion All-American Showcase, a USLacrosse event in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. A four-year starter for the Red Wings, DeSisto scored 42 goals and assisted on 23 as a senior and posted 20 and 14 as a junior. He was a varsity hockey player at Rivers, as well, helping the team to a league championship. During the club season, he played for the Flighting Clubs.
Ryan Fournier played both box and field lacrosse for Team Ontario and was a box player for the Toronto Beaches. As a high school player, he excelled at The Hill Academy where he was a two-year team captain.
Jordan Germershausen played at nearby Calvert Hall College where he amassed 25 goals and seven assists as a senior in 2013. He earned WBAL-TV Prep Player of the Week honors, as well, during a season in which he also picked up 43 ground balls. During club season, Germershausen played for the Crabs and FCA programs and was selected as a FCA club captain.
Johnny McNamara was an all-league player at Brewster Academy, earning mention on the ESPN Rise All-League First Team in 2012 and 2013. Inside Lacrosse listed him as one of the top 100 incoming freshmen after he led Brewster in assists each of the last three years. In the last two seasons, McNamara posted a combined 60 goals and 80 assists (2013 – 32 goals, 48 assists; 2012 – 28 goals, 32 assists). He played club lacrosse for the Fighting Clams and saw action in a bevy of summer all-star games. McNamara was also a varsity letterwinner in golf and soccer for the Bobcats.
Mike Perkins started on three Jamesville-Dewitt High School teams that reached the New York State final four and twice advanced to the championship game. The 2011 Red Rams won the New York title and his senior-year squad were finalists. Perkins scored 16 goals and assisted on 14 as a senior when he was an All-League First Team honoree, and he scored 44 goals and assisted on 22 during his career.
Nick Sawyer will be the third of three siblings to play for the Greyhounds, joining current senior Matt and recently graduated All-American Mike. The youngest Sawyer was a four-year letterwinner at Charlotte Catholic where he picked up Conference 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2013. He was a three-time NCHSAA All-Conference First Team selection and two-time North Carolina All-West First Team member. Sawyer earned USLacrosse All-America honors as a senior and was a two-time team captain and offensive most valuable player. He scored 45 goals and assisted on 21 as a senior, and on the club level, he played for Team Carolina.
Graham Savio earned USLacrosse All-America recognition as a senior in 2013 at Greenwich High School. A faceoff midfielder, Savio was a member of the team that reached the championship game of the Champion All-America Challenge, a US Lacrosse event. He helped the Cardinals advance to the FCIAC Semifinals and the CIAC Class L Quarterfinals.
Ross Schnitzer was a two-time All-League player at Iona Prep where he was a long-stick midfielder. As a senior, he caused 66 turnovers and picked up 102 ground balls for the Gaels after posting 70 and 145 as a junior and 15 and 51 during his sophomore campaign. He was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and he was named to the Journal News’ All-Area First Team. He played club lacrosse for Red Water and NYC Empire.
Zack Sirico was a two-time USLacrosse and SCLCA All-American in 2012 and 2013 at Sayville High School. He helped the Flashes win the 2012 Suffolk County title, and over the last three years, he scored 240 points for Sayville (2013 – 23 goals, 63 assists; 2012 – 15 goals, 83 assists; 2011 – 25 goals, 31 assists). Sirico was named to the All-County and All-Division teams as a junior and senior, as well. In club lacrosse, he played for Sayville and was a Top 205 All-Star. He was a standout on the Sayville football team, as well, helping Sayville to the Suffolk County title as a tailback in 2011 and quarterback in 2012. As a senior, he was an All-Long Island and All-County quarterback, and in 2011, he tied a record with six touchdowns and 40 total points in the Long Island Championship Game, earning Championship Game Most Valuable Player honors.
Brian Sherlock comes to Loyola as a transfer student-athlete after spending last year at the University of North Carolina. Sherlock received a medical hardship waiver for the Tar Heels and will have four years to compete at Loyola. As a high school standout at Saint Anthony’s, Sherlock was the Long Island Catholic League Midfielder of the Year as a senior in 2012, a year in which he scored 39 goals and assisted on 12. He scored at least 31 goals in each of his four seasons at Saint Anthony’s, finishing with a combined 165 over four years (2013 – 39 goals, 12 assists; 2012 – 31 goals, 14 assists; 2011 – 50 goals, 19 assists; 2010 – 45 goals, 26 assists). He was a two-time Under Armour All-American and a member of the Warrior 40 team. Sherlock was also an excellent running back for the Friars’ football team, earning team most valuable player honors as a junior and senior and leading the team to back-to-back Catholic League titles.
