Eyelashes are hairs that grow at the edge of the eyelid. This set of hairs help in the protection of the eye from debris, dirt and strange objects that can be harmful to the eye; they equally perform some of the functions whiskers do on a cat or mouse.

False eye lashes are artificial lashes made from synthetic materials and have been considered a great aesthetic and fashion material by women and fashion enthusiasts the world over. Unlike false eyelashes where synthetic lashes are fixed to the eyelid and then removed after use, eyelash extensions, like its name suggests, are affixed directly to the natural eyelash of the user, with the aim of elongating the lashes for beauty purposes. It is attached to the lashes with a bonding agent or adhesive and can last for over a month. These bonding agents and glues are irritants and can cause discomfort and potential eye damage to users in severe cases.

Fake eyelashes are nothing new in the world of fashion anymore because for decades now, beauty queens, celebrities, fashion models and fashion conscious women generally have been using fake eyelashes as well as eyelash extensions to enhance their natural beauty. Asides all aesthetic and fashion benefits, there are some real risks associated with the use of fake eyelashes.

Glue, adhesives or other materials used to attach these lashes can cause adverse reactions to the eyes and skin around the eyes. Even the slightest of eye irritations can cause eye damage and may sometimes lead to loss of sight permanently.

There are numerous cases where the adhesive used to attach the fake lashes caused allergic reactions that made the eyelids swell, resulting to redness of the eyes. This is by far the most common among the side effects of having fake lashes.

According to experts, use of false eyelashes poses a risk on the personal hygiene of person(s) that use them because they tend to trap dirt and bacteria to the detriment of the eye. These harmful particles usually cause irritation to the eye and eyelids. Natural eyelashes protect the eyes from dust, foreign materials and sweat, while low-quality and unhygienic false eyelashes usually cause irritation and infection. This is probably the most dangerous of all the side effects that can degenerate from the application of fake lashes as infection may result to blindness.

The improper attachment of fake lashes can damage one’s natural lashes, and the extra pressure caused by the false lashes can equally cause damage to the hair follicles, thereby stopping eyelash growth temporarily or permanently.

False eyelashes are more popular than ever, but a new craze for semi-permanent eyelash extensions is also emerging, which experts say needs careful consideration by users.
