Questions under the cut (To be edited later)

1) Anonymous: Hi ! I am curious about France and since you are my only
reference, i hope i don’t bother you ;~;. The language is really
intriguing and i hope to learn more so do u have any french series to
recommend please ?

Hi anon ^^

No, you’re not bothering me, that’s ok. Yup, I can recommend you some French series. Here’s a list from the top of my head:

Recommended and relatively easy to understand:

Chérif

Cain

Les petits meurtres d'Agatha Christie

Nestor Burma (old TV series about a private eye, but super funny and easy to understand)

Tunnel (French adaptation of The Bridge)

Clara Sheller

Caméra Café

Les Enquêtes du Commissaire Maigret (a bit slow but I love this show)

Un Village Français (about the WW2)

A bit harder to understand because there are a lot of jokes, play on words, or just a more difficult vocabulary:

Kaamelott. The hilarious adventures of King Arthur

Kaboul Kitchen. The series depicts the life of French expatriate Jacky who runs the
popular restaurant Kaboul Kitchen in Kabul, Afghanistan. His daughter
Sophie, who he has not seen in 20 years, arrives to do humanitarian
work, while he is interested only in making money.

Hard (not
for everybody. A woman from a rich neighborhood discovers after the
death of her husband that his fortune comes from a Porn Movie company.
She has no other choice, in order to maintain her lifestyle, than
becoming the new boss of her late-husband business. Tons of hilarious
sex jokes, of course)

H (One of the only
French sitcoms). A bit hard to understand, but super funny. It’s about
the life of male nurses at a French hospital.

Very Bad Blagues (now The Palma Show). I’m not sure that Tumblr is ready for that one because you have one offensive joke every 10 seconds.

Bref. The vocabulary isn’t difficult but the narrator speaks VERY fast.

Avez-vous déjà vu? Short and hilarious cartoons, available on YouTube.

Engrenages (Cop show)

Hero Corp One of the only Super Hero series in France!

Stay away from the ones below. They are super famous but Jesuuuuus, they are bad!!!!

Joséphine, ange gardien

Julie Lescaut

Navarro

Camping Paradis

Une femme d’honneur

What
you can also do is looking for French versions of your favorite anime
or movies. Bruce Willis’ voice in French is awesome, just saying! If you
can handle it, here’s a scene from Iron-Man 3 in French: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngacA8TA0kI

I hope it helped! Thanks for your message anon ^^

2) Anonymous: bonjour petite madame! i’m an australian student who’s going
to stay with a host family in france. i was wondering what words french
people use for english words like fanfiction, fandom, shipping and
things? i want to be able to explain what sort of things i do in my free
time to my host family. merci beaucoup! aussi, j'aime beaucoup votre

Hi, my little koala ^^

Oh, a travel to France! I hope you will
enjoy your stay and that your host family will be nice. I’m sure they
will be happy to have you with them! We receive a lot of English and
Americans but not a lot of Australians. And yes, you are gonna have
questions about koalas and kangaroos, it’s intriguing for us xD ha! Ha!
Sorry in advance :D

(Also, be careful to your phone and wallet. Ask your family about the tricks the pickpockets use so that you can be prepared. )

Anyway…

i was wondering what words French people use for English words like fanfiction, fandom, shipping and things?

You
are gonna be disappointed because we use a lot of “anglicismes”
(English words) when we talk about fan fictions. It’s the same thing
when we talk about computers for example, we talk about “start-ups” and
applications that are “user-friendly” or “gay-friendly”. Even when there
is a French word for it, we hardly don’t use it sometimes. For instance
we rarely say that we have a “courriel” but that we have an “email”
coming.

So, back to your precise question now. Here are what
we use in French. However, you have to understand that these words are
known only by people who are familiar with this kind of stuff. If you
want your host family to understand, you’ll have to explain what it is
all about. I wrote in French some explanations you can give them, a kind
of fan fiction 101 if you will. Just adapt what I wrote to what you
draw/write and your OTP, of course. I wrote them as if you were speaking, so be careful.

Fan fiction: we use “fan fictions” or if you want to explain: Ce

Slash: we use “Slash”. Explanation in French. (I used Steve and Tony as an example, just change the names and what the characters do): C’est
Captain America et Iron Man.
ensemble! ^^

Shipping: Honestly, I have no idea what word we use for this. Just say that it’s: C’est
On a tous nos

Fandom: Ok, there’s a word for this one: communauté de fans…but now we also use “fandom”. In French: En
Marvel et Game of Thrones.

Voilà anon! I hope it helped! You
also have the French wikipedia article about fan fictions, you’ll maybe
find all the vocabulary you need there:

Have a nice stay in France! (and thank you for enjoying my art so much! ^^)
