Apple’s WWDC keynote is over and, as expected, the folks at Cupertino had a ton of things to reveal about OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Just in case you want to check to see what was revealed during the two hour keynote in one easy-to-read news post, we got your covered.
OS X 10.10 Yosemite officially announced
Apple uses a U.S. national park, Yosemite, as the code name for the next version of its long running operating system for Mac PCs. The choice of name is certainly a different direction compared to OS X 10.9, Mavericks.
Apple says there are now 80 million Mac users
Apple claims Mac shipments have increased 12 percent over the past year while overall PC shipments have gone down five percent. Also, over 40 million Mac users have already upgraded to the free version of OS X 10.9 Mavericks, which is over half of all Mac PC owners.
OS X 10.10 Yosemite features brand new design
The new look has some features that users of iOS 7 might be familiar with, such as an more transparent user interface, a refreshed typography, a new dark mode to help reduce distraction and much more. In other words, if you like iOS 7 you will like this.
Apple shows off the new Notification Center in OS X 10.10 Yosemite
OS X 10.10 will notify users about calendar events, stock market price changes and much more with the new Notification Center. Apple is also looking to add support for the center’s widgets and apps from the App Store to help Yosemite users.
iCloud Drive brings cross-platform cloud storage
Apple’s new cloud storage and sharing service will work for iOS, OS X and even Windows and will sync files from different devices. It’s an obvious effort to go after services like Microsoft’s OneDrive and Dropbox and it should be interesting to see how it is received.
Mail in OS X 10.10 includes smart markup, MailDrop, and more
The Mail app in Yosemite will include new features such as MailDrop to allow users to sent attachments as large as 5GB to recipients, along with Markup that will allow Mac users to actually draw inside emails.
Revamped Safari for Yosemite shown off at WWDC
As expected, Apple will release a new version of its Safari web browser as part of the OS X 10.10 release, which will include some performance boosts, a new “stack view” for tabs, and a single toolbar to allow for showing more content.
Spotlight is completely redesigned, more powerful in OS X 10.10 Yosemite
The Spotlight feature in OS X 10.10 now shows up in the center of the screen when activated and will expand as users type in their search string. It also brings up both web and local content for search results and even offers links to purchase items directly from Spotlight.
iPhone will be able to hand off phone calls and text messages to Mac
People who also own an iPhone along with their Mac will be able to hand off phone calls and text messages from the iOS device to their Mac as part of the OS X 10.10 Yosemite updates. The Mac can be used as a speakerphone as well.
OS X 10.10 Yosemite available for developers today, customers getting it this fall
It’s not a shock to learn that OS X 10.10 is now available for developers, or that it will be released to the public for free this fall. However, for the first time ever, the general public will be able to download a beta of Yosemite sometime this summer.
