Tips from a personal stylist.

In a perfect world we would have infinite amounts of money to have all of our garments tailor made to fit our shapes perfectly, accentuating our best assets and hiding those of which we are less fond.

The real story is that most of us can’t afford such luxury, and to add to this not so fairylike tale is the fact that designers have a ‘fit model’ around which their garments are designed. The chances of you, the buyer, being the same shape and height as this model are extremely slim, pardon the pun, so your purchases may not accentuate your best assets as much you would like.

We’ve all stood in front of a mirror in a changing room pulling in the waist of a garment or adjusting the sleeves and wishing it was just a little different, and that dress or jacket would be perfect. You’re probably right, as you generally know what suits you. If the size is correct, the quality is high and you can see yourself loving the item for many seasons to come, why not make it look like it was designed just for you?

This is where a good tailor can be your best friend.

A taper here, a slightly shorter skirt, pant or sleeve length and all of a sudden YOU are the fit model and the item really was made for you. Or at least it will look that way.

Are you a little on the short side and looking for a cocktail dress? The hemlines are all too long, aren’t they? Make friends with your tailor.

Are you slightly larger proportioned in the bust or the hip and your dresses always too tight as a result? Make friends with your tailor!

Having clothes altered to fit is a small and obvious investment which will make your wardrobe fit well and flatter you, and also add to your personal style. You will not only look better and feel better but if they fit beautifully and make you feel like a million dollars, you will also get more wear out of your favorite pieces.

It doesn’t matter how great the quality, fabric, cut and design of a garment is if it doesn’t fit you well. Become your own ‘fit model’ with your own personal tailor. You deserve to look your best.
