Where? Sochi, Russia

When? 7th to 23rd of February 2014

The official XXII Olympic Winter Games (statistically the 22nd Winter Olympics), are all set to take place in the Black Sea town of Sochi in Russia. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics will be organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC).

In essence there will be 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines. Sochi was selected as the host city back in July 2007. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics within the Russian Federation, since the breakup of the USSR took place in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

The events for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics will be held around 2 clusters of new venues. An Olympic Park was constructed in the Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with the Fisht Olympic Stadium. The Games' indoor venues are located within walking distance, and snow events will be held at Krasnaya Polyana.

In preparation for the games, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. Originally the budget was $12 billion USD, however various factors caused the budget to expand to over $51 billion USD, well over the estimated $44 billion USD cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the most expensive Olympics in history.

The below new competitions will feature:

Biathlon mixed relay

Women's ski jumping

Figure skating mixed team

Luge mixed team

Ski half-pipe (men’s and women’s)

Ski slopestyle (men’s and women’s)

Snowboard slopestyle (men’s and women’s)

Snowboard parallel slalom (men’s and women’s).
