There’s nothing like retreating to your bathroom for some much needed peace and quiet, and thanks to John Cullen Lighting, you can enhance this home haven with some inspiring mood lights. Founded in 1981, this leading lighting specialist offers a complete service for all aspects of interior and exterior lighting, and Design Director Sally Storey has some expert advice on illuminating your bathroom space…

1) “Whatever lighting you use in your bathroom, take care to ensure that the colour rendition is as close as possible to natural daylight. The colour of the light produced by good LED fittings is now as good as traditional halogen lighting, but cheaper LED lighting options will not be so reliable and may also vary a surprising amount.”

2) “Ensure your bathroom lighting has an IP rating (ingress protection) which is appropriate to the “zone” it is located in. For example, light used in a shower will need a higher IP rating than a light above a basin. If in doubt, use the following link to find a clear explanation of the subject – www.johncullenlighting.co.uk/products/general-lighting-guides/bathroom-ip-rating“

3) “The mirror you use for putting on make-up or shaving should be lit evenly from either side – which should provide the most accurate and flattering result. A pair of Bathroom Wall Lights offer a good solution.”

4) “Use a recessed downlight, such as the 12w LED Waterlily, to skim light down the back wall of a shower or bath, which can add some drama and also make the area feel a little larger by lighting the perimeter walls.”

5) “Use feature lighting to create an attractive atmosphere. Put recessed lights, such as Lucca 1w LED spots into alcoves, back-light an opaque bath panel (which could even be colour changing for a bit of fun), or position uplights, such as 1w LED Luccas, behind the bath for a dramatic effect. You can also use a floor washer, such as a 1w LED Oslo or Cazalla as a nightlight or just to create a glow under a basin.”

6) “Bathroom lighting should be controlled on at least two different circuits; one for downlights and one for the wall lights. Ideally, dim the lighting on both circuits to create different moods, or use a preset lighting system so that you can change the atmosphere instantly at the touch of a button.”

7) “For a simple nightlight, consider using a PIR (presence detector) to control low level LED floorwashers and uplights.”
