PAS will not urge Prime Minister Najib Razak to go on leave as it feels the case involving the prime minister is different from that of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
PAS Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the statement by PAS Spiritual Leader Haron Din, urging Lim to go on leave, was spot on as Lim’s case had already been brought to court.
“I have read Haron Din’s statement in the media. To me, Lim’s case is different from that of the prime minister’s.
“Lim’s case will be tried soon while Najib has not been charged in court,” he told FMT.
Tuan Ibrahim was commenting on a statement by former Batu Kawan Umno Division Vice-Chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who questioned the “advice” Haron had given to Lim to take leave until the case was completed.
Khairuddin further questioned Haron’s action of not giving the same advice to the prime minister, following RM2.6 billion in political donations found in Najib’s personal accounts.
Lim has been charged with abuse of power and corruption to benefit himself and his wife, Betty Chew. One charge involves the conversion of agricultural land for residential use while the other involves the purchase of his bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn at RM2.8 million, below the market value of RM4.7 million.
Businesswoman Phang Li Koon and her company were named in both charges. She was accused of abetting Lim.
Meanwhile, PAS Research Centre Director Dr Zuhdi Marzuki said Haron’s statement did not indicate any “double standards.”
“If Najib was charged in court like Lim, he too will have to go on leave during the trial.”
