AN EMPLOYEE of BMW Sytner Group in Haverfordwest has been given a suspended prison sentence, and will also have to pay £2,489.29 in compensation, £85 court costs and a £115 surcharge, after tricking a customer.

Mrs Williams, was conned into paying £2,000 to cover labour for a garage repair, directly into Picton’s his personal bank account, for a job which should have cost less than £500.

Haverfordwest Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday (Mar 27), that she also then also sent Jamie Picton, of Glebelands, Johnston, £28,000 into the same account when she decided to purchase a new vehicle. However, she questioned the situation when there was no sign of her car, leading to Picton’s crime being exposed – and his arrest. Picton has a previous conviction for stealing from an employer.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, told the bench that the BMW Sytner Group had refunded Mrs Williams’ £2,000. In a statement read to the court, Mrs Williams, who has been reimbursed, said: “I feel a fool for having shaken his hand when he had stolen from us. I was worried that we would never get that money back.”

As well as the financial penalty, Magistrates sentenced Picton to six months in custody, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and a 15 day rehabilitation activity requirement. The court was told that the father-of-three had received counselling for gambling issues. Picton had also received support for mental health, bereavement and financial issues. He said that he suffered severe depression following the death of his father.
