As an officer of Wayne County Community College District’s Phi-Theta Kappa Chapter Alpha Upsilon Zeta, I have had the opportunity to become involved in volunteering in my community. These opportunities have had a huge impact on the way in which I see how volunteering can change a community.
Marcia Evans, the president of Wayne County Community College District’s Phi-Theta Kappa Alpha Upsilon Zeta Chapter, and I have gotten the opportunity to work alongside Executive Women’s International (EWI of Detroit /Windsor), “Brick by Book” program; as they change the lives of elementary students in Southwest Detroit. What EWI has done for the students of Harms Elementary School is life changing. Marcia and I had the opportunity and pleasure of working together with EWI’s Renea Anastasia, and other members of EWI Detroit/Windsor, ensuring that the children of Harms Elementary School, receive the educational materials they need to become successful in their reading and written comprehension.
Brick by Book is a literacy program, designed to promote the importance of the reading and written comprehension in elementary school children at Harms Elementary. Harms Elementary is a public school that is “Beating the Odds,” recognized by the Michigan Department of Education as one of the top 50 schools in the state of Michigan.
This summer Marcia and I plan to promote the importance of the program alongside EWI, and gather supplies for the students to use in their classrooms. The supplies will be collected from neighboring community businesses and distributed to the children. Many of the elementary schools of the Detroit Public School System slip through the cracks and do not receive the funding they need to promote academic excellence. I want to be a part of this. I can help by going to neighborhood organizations and asking for any supplies the students might need to be able to be productive during the school year. I am encouraging Wayne County Community College District’s Chapter of Phi-Theta Kappa to get involved. What EWI is doing, is insuring these children have a chance to THRIVE.
I am encouraging every chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, to adopt a school, and promote the importance of reading and written expression. Together, all of Phi Theta Kappa’s Chapters can help increase the reading and written success of the elementary student success in America. Step Up, and Speak Out, Phi Theta Kappa, and become a part of the success of an elementary school’s reading and written comprehension student success story.Victoria is the first in her family to go to college and has earned an AS and AA degree at Wayne County Community College where she graduated at the top of her class in 2015 as the WCCCD’s Special Recognition Award Recipient. Victoria is an officer of both Phi-Theta Kappa and Tri-Beta Biological Honors Societies. She continues to build on her leadership skills by working closely with Executive Women’s International of Detroit /Windsor (EWI). Outside of the classroom, she enjoys quality time with her granddaughters.
