Coming off a good finish in the regional finals, Santa Rosa Junior College qualified seven wrestlers for the state championships.
The California Community College Athletic Association championships opened Friday and run through today at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
Qualifying for Santa Rosa were Robert Smith, 125, San Marin; Arron Pen-Kruger, 133, Albany; Logan Fore, 133, Windsor High; Kenji Gutierrez, 141, Saint Helena High; Dan Larman, 157, Albany; Kaden Martin, 165, Eureka; and Isia Guzman, 174, Windsor High.
On the season Santa Rosa was 9-5 in meets.
Santa Rosa then finished fifth at the NorCal Regional Tournament, at Sierra College in Rocklin, a week ago. Pacing the Bear Cubs with top five places were Smith, Pen Kruger, Fore, Larman and Guzman.
Lauren Curtin named an All-American
Sonoma State soccer standout Lauren Curtin was an NCAA Division II All-America selection, capping a strong comeback season.
Curtin, from Maria Carrillo, was selected to the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Women’s All-America First Team.
After missing a season to injury, Curtin was second in scoring in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State reached the NCAA Division II tournament for a second consecutive season.
Curtin also was named the CCAA Women’s Soccer Newcomer of the Year and earned First Team All-CCAA and All-West Region honors.
Sonoma State also placed senior defender Lauren Fryer, from San Clemente, and Curtin’s twin sister, senior forward Cara Curtin, on the 2013 NSCAA Division II All-West First Team.
Karli Nestler, out of Santa Rosa, made second-team All-West. Nestler is a junior defender at Cal State Stanislaus.
SSU’s Varnadore selected to regional team
Sonoma State scoring leader Taylor Varnadore was selected one of the best in the West by the nation’s soccer coaches.
The four-year starter from Analy was voted to the 2013 NSCAA NCAA Division II Men’s All-West First Team.
Varnadore ended his Sonoma State career third best in program history for both goals (42) and scoring (95 total points).
For his senior season, Varnadore was second in goals and third in scoring in the CCAA. Those numbers earned Varnadore the CCAA Most Valuable Offensive Player award.
