A kitchen cleaver tucked into the belt of a trench-coat-cloaked figure. A seductive woman with blood red lipstick, eyes concealed in shadow by a wide-brimmed hat. A gape-mouthed young girl staring at something just beyond the camera’s line of sight, terror visible in her eyes.
All these images conjure an air of mystery, which is probably why the covers of paperback novels and DVD covers have donned such stylistic choices for years.
For mystery buffs, it’s fascinating to investigate how the aesthetics of the genre have evolved over time, from the black and white scenes of the film noir era to illustrated book covers to modern movie trailers. TBS’s new show, Search Party, employs some of these same, time-tested elements and aesthetics in order to tell a compelling tale of twists and turns. Die-hard mystery fans will want to binge watch the show on 11/21. …
