Honey bees are in the news almost every week. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has drawn attention to honey bees like never before. We are reminded of the importance of honey bees in the production of everything from apples and almonds to onions and alfalfa. This Intensive 101 beekeeping seminar is suitable to new and experienced beekeepers or those contemplating a backyard beehive. Learn basic knowledge about honeybees and how to start hives in your own backyard.

Pest Management: Yard & Garden Insects Driving You Buggy?

Pest insect numbers can explode this time of year. Spend an early evening indoors and outdoors with Bill Schall learning more about managing yard and garden pests with conventional and less toxic methods. Feel free to bring specimens in sealed plastic bags for identification, along with any questions you may have about fighting back against these creatures that, by weight, outnumber us 200 to 1!

Everything Orchids: A Shady Affair Plant Sale

Mounts’ Everything Orchids weekend event is made for the shade. This plant sale offers a great opportunity to acquire the best orchid and shade loving plants.  Fun and informative lectures will be offered on topics such as basic orchid care, shade loving plants and fragrance plants. This area’s premier plant vendors will be selling begonias, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, hoyas, aroids and more. Magnificent tabletop arrangements will be offered in a silent auction to benefit the garden.

Their landscape designs have won acclamation for their thoughtful solutions and artistic applications.

Gardening with Ornamental Native Wildflowers

We are delighted to have Rufino Osorio, author of A Gardener’s Guide to Florida’s Native Plants give a presentation on growing and using wildflowers in flower beds, perennial borders, meadows, and as potted plants. Learn how to use wildflowers as groundcovers and as a lawn substitute. Focus on the horticultural and aesthetic uses of wildflowers. Mr. Osorio will include a wide variety of native wildflowers in his talk, as well as a small selection of carefully screened and compatible non-native ones. Enjoy a self-guided stroll through the garden afterward.
