I have been cloth diaper my two babies since my daughter was about three months old. She has been potty trained for over a year and a half now, but my toddler son still wears diapers. I have quite the fluffy stash, but I still love trying new diapers. When recently offered the chance to review a HumBumHy hybrid cloth diaper from HumBird in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to try a gorgeous handmade hybrid.

About HumBird

Specializing in handcrafting high quality diapers and diaper accessories, Dawn at HumBird Creations began creating cloth diapers in 2010 and launched her WAHM business online in 2012. She wanted to create a line of European wool diaper covers that emphasized breathability, comfort, and style. She named her company after the hummingbird, which represents beauty and is a reminder of her late father who passed away in 2010. Each and every product in the HumBird shop is designed and created with love and high quality components. All items made by HumBird in 2016 are CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) compliant in the United States and Canada.

Price and Design

I received a HumBumHy in Bohemian Fox from HumBird. Made for babies between 10 and 40+ pounds, the handmade hybrid diaper currently costs $48.99. The baby blue diaper with an adorable red fox embroidered on the bum consists of a hidden layer of Windpro performance fleece sandwiched between an organic bamboo velour outer and inner shell. All fabrics have been pre-washed and dried to ensure comfort and durability. Top quality Prym super elastic ensures a snug and comfortable fit. Although not waterproof, the absorbent Windpro fleeces allows the cover to work well without a cover for two to six hours depending on your child. The hybrid diaper comes with two soakers. The large consists of one layer of organic bamboo velour and two layers of super heavy organic bamboo fleece. The small consists of two layers of super heavy organic bamboo fleece and one layer of Polartec. The torso features four rows of two snaps that allow for small, medium, large, and extra-large rise settings. The waist features a row of ten snaps. The waist tabs include three snaps each and two crossover snaps for an extra small fit.

Laundering

Because I am super lazy about doing laundry, I require a cloth diaper that fits into my current cloth diaper laundry routine, and my HumBumHy fits in perfectly! HumBird recommends using low to warm machine settings to prolong the life of the fabrics and resist fading and shrinking. Inserts require eight to ten washes to reach maximum absorbency. I prewashed my HumBumHy once with my other diaper laundry prior to first trying the diaper on my son. I also noticed that the inserts become more absorbent with each additional washing and drying.

Between washes, I place my dirty HumBumHy in a pail liner inside my diaper pail. On laundry day, I toss my diaper pail full of dirty diapers in my washing machine for a hot (water heater set to non-scald temperatures) heavy wash with some powdered detergent followed by two cold rinses. (I sometimes do a pre-wash with cold first for poopy diapers.) I then toss the clean diapers in my dryer on delicate (low heat) for 90 minutes. My HumBird hybrid comes out clean smelling and looking every time. I therefore rate the HumBumHy very highly in terms of ease of washing and drying.

Performance

When I first showed my son his new Bohemian Fox HumBumHy from HumBird, he excitedly pointed at the fox on the bum and said, “Whoa!” He loves foxes and loves his new fox diaper. Whenever he sees the clean diaper on the top of his diaper pile, he picks it for his next diaper change. I immediately noticed the softness of the blue bamboo velour. Of all the diapers in my stash, my HumBird is definitely the softest wash after wash. My son loves rubbing the outside of the diaper, which is always soft to the touch. I like to use both inserts, which snap together and to the diaper, so the super soft velour touches my son directly against his diaper area as well. I love know that such a soft material touches my son in his most delicate area.

My son currently weights about 26 pounds. He wears his HumBumHy on the medium rise setting and second to smallest waist setting with the crossover snaps. My son is quite tiny for almost two years old (just like his mama), so I have no doubt in my mind that his HumBird diaper will fit him well into potty training (and maybe even beyond). My daughter, who is almost five years old, weighs 36 pounds and could still fit into this hybrid. If you are searching for a cloth diaper that will fit a larger child, definitely check out HumBird! The quality of this diaper is also superb. The stitching is even and secure. If I did not know better, I would think that this hybrid was commercially manufactured because the evenness and quality.

I typically prefer waterproof diapers, but so far I have been super impressed with my HumBumHy. As autumn cools down, my son will soon have to wear more than just a diaper around the house, but, for most of the summer, he ran around only diapered. With a waterproof diaper, my son typically goes about four hours between diaper changes. The same is true for my HumBird hybrid. Although not waterproof, the Windpro fleece combined with the two inserts is extremely absorbent. The diaper would also work extremely well overnight coupled with a waterproof cover.

As for solid messes, the HumBumHy performs equally well. My son eats a lot of high fiber food and also nurses a lot still, so his poopy diapers are usually quite messy still. My HumBird diaper contained all manner of grossness without any leaks or blowouts. Even after an extremely high fiber meal of mostly fruit, the diaper did not fail me! I love that I do not have to worry about messy poop leaks with this awesome hybrid cloth diaper.

26 Pounds

Final Verdict

If you are a fan of hybrid cloth diapers, I highly recommend the HumBumHy from HumBird Creations. I received a HumBumHy in Bohemian Fox, which fits babies between 10 and 40+ pounds. The super soft blue diaper with an adorable red fox embroidered on the bum consists of a hidden layer of Windpro performance fleece sandwiched between an organic bamboo velour outer and inner shell and comes with two snap-in inserts. My tiny 26-pound toddler son currently wears the diaper on the medium rise setting and second to smallest waist setting with the crossover snaps, and my almost five-year-old daughter could easily fit in it as well. Although not waterproof, the hybrid remains dry on the outside for about four hours because of the absorbent Windpro fleece and two inserts. The diaper also handles all manner of solid messes extremely well. I am super impressed with the HumBumHy from HumBird and highly recommend the WAHM brand to all cloth diaper fans!
