Club hosts oldies dance

Millville PAL to host golf outing

BUENA VISTA – The Millville Police Athletic League will host its first golf outing at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 1 at Buena Vista Country Club on Route 40.

The entry fee is $125, including a hot breakfast buffet, cart, green fees, premium gift, beer at the turn, and awards ceremony and luncheon to honor Millville Police PAL officers, volunteers and student representatives. The fee for lunch only is $35.

Prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, putting green, and hole-in-ones. Skill prizes for first, second, and third place teams also will be awarded.

The Millville Police Athletic League is a community-based group that includes Millville police officers, police chaplains and community volunteers who promote positive relationships between Millville’s youth and law enforcement through sponsored activities and events geared toward youths becoming successful, vibrant members of the community.

Fundraiser set to help neighbors

WINSLOW – The Hammonton Cancer Foundation’s ninth annual “Helping Our Neighbors” fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Winslow Manor at Hay and Hall streets. It will include a buffet dinner with homemade desserts, a silent auction and an honor/memory slideshow. BRIDGETON – South Jersey Robotics will host the second annual Robot Run at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 in Bridgeton City Park.

4-H to host open house, volunteer meeting

DEERFIELD – The Cumberland County 4-H Youth Development Program offers monthly volunteer orientations for new 4-H club leaders and 4-H program volunteers. Conducted by County 4-H Agent Julie Karavan, the next session will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office, 291 Morton Ave., Rosenhayn.

Adults and youths interested in learning more about the 4-H program are encouraged to attend the annual 4-H Open House at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Extension Center. Leaders and youths from 4-H clubs will be on hand with displays and activities.

“If you do not see a club that fits your needs at our open house, then we encourage you to start a new 4-H club. The 4-H experience is one of the very best gifts a parent can offer their child,” Karavan said. A 4-H club consists of two appointed adult 4-H leaders and at least five youths from three different families. The 4-H clubs typically meet at least monthly.

Interested volunteers can complete their online applications and leader orientation during orientation. Information on chartering a new club will be provided to interested 4-H leaders. The 4-H volunteer appointment process includes a background check, orientation and required youth protection training, which can be completed at home online.

‘Terror in Timbers’ volunteers needed

PITTSGROVE – The Parvin State Park Appreciation Committee seeks ghoulish volunteers to assist with this year’s “Terror in the Timbers” event.

Mandatory orientation meetings for all Halloween volunteers will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 at the Danna property, 789 Parvin Mill Road. Reservations are requested.

Terror in the Timbers will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 and 30. Admission is $6. Attendees age 13 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Paint parties planned at Carazy Paint Studio

BRIDGETON – Court Appointed Special Advocates of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties will host painting fundraisers from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12 and 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at Carazy Paint Studio, 571 Shiloh Pike.

The cost is $35, including $15 donation to CASA, snack fare, a glass of wine, painting instruction, a large wine glass and painting supplies. Guests also will have an opportunity to win a basket of goodies from Carazy Paint.

CASA trains and supports community volunteers who speak up for abused and neglected children in court. Proceeds from this event will help children who have suffered abuse and neglect at the hands of adults.

VINELAND – Boscov at Cumberland Mall seeks local nonprofit organizations to participate in its annual Friends Helping Friends charity day on Oct. 18.

Here’s how it works: Any 501(c) or 170(c)1 nonprofit organization is eligible to participate, and there is no cost or obligation to any participating organization. Groups will be supplied with as many $5 shopping passes as they want to sell to friends, neighbors, members, family and anyone in the community.

Everyone who purchases a $5 Friends Helping Friends pass receives a 25 percent discount shopping pass for purchases made on Oct. 18. Participating groups keep the $5 from every shopping pass sold and are eligible to win additional donations from Boscov’s at each store. Boscov’s supplies the passes, signs, advertising and free refreshments served throughout the day in the store on Friends Helping Friends Day.

Scholarships golf tournament to benefit community college

CAPE MAY – The 2016 Atlantic Cape Community College Scramble “Fore” Scholarships golf tournament will be held Oct. 7 at Cape May National Golf Club on Route 9. Partnering with the Atlantic Cape Foundation, Cape May National will host the tournament to support student scholarships and foundation operations. In honor of the college’s upcoming 50th anniversary, a few surprises will also be added to the event.

The tournament will follow a scramble format, beginning with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Player fees, which include a complimentary gift, lunch and awards dinner, are $150 per person or $500 per foursome.

Rockin’ half marathon to help cancer research

PHILADELPHIA – The American Association for Cancer Research Rock ’n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon will be held Sept. 17 and 18. The historic race, running for its 39th year in 2016, returns to its traditional mid-September date. The event is known for live bands and fanfare, entertaining participants along the course.

The revamped course this year will take runners past new sights including Fairmount Avenue and the historic Eastern State Penitentiary. Free eight-week half-marathon training tips are available online for runners of all abilities.

“We are thrilled to be back in Philadelphia and look forward to putting on another world-class running event,” said Elisa Hoffman, marketing manager for the event. “With an updated course and rockin’ headliner, this event is one you won’t want to miss.”

This year’s event will feature the American Association for Cancer Research Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17. The run will start and finish in Eakins Oval in Fairmount Park. Participants who run both the 5K and the half marathon will earn the Remix Challenge Medal in addition to each race’s finisher medal.

The half-marathon will start at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 18. The course also will start and finish in Eakins Oval. Participants will run by sites including City Hall, the LOVE sculpture, Boathouse Row and the Schuylkill River. Live bands, enthusiastic cheerleaders and spectators will line the race route, concluding with the post-race Toyota Rock ’n’ Roll Concert Series headlined by Guster.

The race weekend will kick off with a free health and fitness expo, where exhibitors will offer free samples and health information. The expo will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Parvin State Park group seeks new volunteers

PITTSGROVE – The Parvin State Park Appreciation Committee seeks volunteers of all ages and abilities.

Volunteers are needed to help with overall park maintenance. They are asked to participate once a month, on the third Saturday, in “general work days” when trails are cleaned or widened and other upkeep is performed.

There are various fundraising events held throughout the year, usually not more than once a month.

The major fundraiser is the annual Halloween event in October. Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success.

The committee and other volunteers also are working to build a museum that highlights the park’s history and its relationship with various historical events in the area.

Nominations are being accepted for the Volunteer Center of South Jersey’s sixth annual Spirit of Community Awards.

“Volunteers take on many different tasks, but their goal is the same: a passionate desire to make South Jersey a better place to live,” Executive Director Michele Epifani said. “Their tireless work is worthy of celebration and recognition.”

Categories for nominations include:

•Community Awards: These awards can be nominated by individuals and any organization type, nonprofit and business. Volunteer hours/service must be verified by the organizations where the nominee served.

•South Jersey Humanitarian of the Year: This award is designed to honor a South Jersey leader who has consistently gone above and beyond to make his/her community a better place through their commitment to volunteerism and selfless acts of service.

•Bob Shryock Community Service Award: This award is for a local nonprofit organization that has shown unwavering commitment to volunteerism and the community.

•Distinguished Youth Service Award: This award recognizes community leaders, ages 14 to 23, who have made a great impact in the community. The final recipient of this award is specially selected by the Volunteer Center’s nomination committee. No minimum hour requirement.

•Corporate Excellence Award: This award honors a socially responsible company with an exemplary commitment to service in their community.

•President’s Volunteer Service Award: These awards, offered at the bronze, silver, gold and lifetime levels, recognize the valuable contributions of volunteers nationwide who are answering the president’s call to serve others. Recipients receive a signed letter from the president, a service pin, and letters of commendation from local legislative offices.

•Nonprofit Awards: These awards can be nominated by a nonprofit organization only.

•Volunteer Manager of the Year Award: This honor recognizes achievement in the creation, implementation and leadership of an effective volunteer program to meet social need.

•Volunteer of the Year Award: This award provides a public platform for local nonprofits to recognize a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution in their agency.

•Corporate Awards: These awards can be nominated by a business organization only.

•HEROES Award — Honoring Excellence, Rewarding Outstanding Employee Service: This new award offers local corporations and small businesses a platform to celebrate a “star employee” who has dedicated time, talent and resources to making a difference in the local community and whose unwavering commitment has served as an example and inspiration to the entire organization.

Event at Southwind Vineyard to aid autism organization

MILLVILLE – The Local Ladies Social Network will host Septemberfest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 at Southwind Vineyard, 385 Lebanon Road.

Visitors are invited to spend the day at the winery and dressage barn. The event will feature a variety of vendors and crafters, face painting, food and wine. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair.

Admission is free. Wine tasting is available for $5. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Autism Society Southwest NJ Affiliate No. 532.
