Bras for a Cause is back at it again this year to help cancer patients who are under-insured and uninsured receive treatment.

And in doing so, the non-profit will use the Seguin Professional Firefighters Association as models to shimmy down the catwalk, showing off the decorated bras in a live auction.

“A woman always loves to see a man strut his stuff in a bra,” said Jo Ann Maples, who is the board member for Guadalupe County Bras for a Cause. “Many of us have been affected by cancer. We either know someone who has battled and won or battled and lost against the disease. The purpose of our cause is to rally together in a fun event and raise money to help those fighting cancer and help become a survivor.”

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at the Knight of Columbus Hall, 1015 S. Austin St.

Alcoholic beverages are provided, along with hors-d’oeuvres, and Next Door Catering will supply dinner.

Like the previous year, organizers have found five cancer warriors, survivors and caregivers to share their stories and experience with the disease.

“We wanted to honor these individuals by letting them tell their stories,” Maples said. “Hearing these stories of struggle and survival is very moving.”

Mapels explained how this event was important to the organization and how it’s impactful locally.

“Originally, Bras for a Cause was to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer,” she said. “We as a committee wanted the funds we raise to stay in our community. We decided we wanted to help everyone. Cancer is a hard thing to go through, so we wanted to support every cancer patient, not just breast cancer patients.”

This is the second year Bras for a Cause is hosting its event. Last year it made more than $20,000, which was donated to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Assistance Fund, and this year the organization hopes to make more.

“The Cancer Assistance Fund was formed with a bequest from a longtime friend of the foundation and provides for the needs of cancer patients that qualify for charity infusion chemotherapy at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center,” said Emilie Bailey, GRMF Executive Director. “We feel strongly that even those patients that are uninsured and unfunded should still have access to the curative cancer treatments that GRMC provides. The foundation is excited and honored to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from Bras for a Cause.”

In addition to an auction of elaborately-decorated undergarments, Maples said you can also win a variety of other prizes such as Spurs tickets, donated by First Commercial Bank, and a KitchenAid Stand Mixer, donated by Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative, plus a variety of other items being sold at the silent auction.

She said table sponsors are still available and tickets are still for sale.

“Bras for a Cause is an entertaining and unique event unlike any other in Seguin,” Bailey said. “It is an unbelievably fun and energetic evening, but at the same time, a touching testament to the effect cancer has on those we love. I, and many others in the room, were captivated and moved by the stories of those in our community that have or are currently bravely battling cancer who gave their testimonies at the event. Bras For A Cause is uplifting, motivational and full of incredible entertainment and nonstop excitement. I would encourage anyone to attend … you will not be disappointed!”
