When I first moved to Lafayette, I wondered how I was ever going to furnish our new home. Back then, old was in and many homes were filled with antiques or family pieces that had been handed down for generations.

Coming from an older part of New Orleans, I definitely was into antiques. But the question was, where do you find such items?

We scoured antiques shops from Lafayette to Washington, Louisiana, looking for things we could use in our home, at a reasonable price.

Today, antiques are not in near as much demand. So while finding the exact pieces you want may be a challenge, the good news is, the prices have gotten much better.

“Everything is negotiable,” said Kathy Padgett manager of Le Cadeau on Johnston Street. “You just need to research what you are looking for. We have a big variety and we try to stay vintage. We aren’t necessarily high end but we’re not a flea market either.”

Padgett said Le Cadeau is made up of several vendors who sell everything form primitive furniture to antique decoy ducks. She said most people who visit her shop are looking for vintage kitchen items, sterling and old jewelry.

Gerrie Autry and Bruce Broussard of Lafayette Antiques said many customers are looking for high-end European antiques, as well as country and primitive furniture. A lot of what people want depends on the season, however.

“In the spring time, people are looking to refresh their homes,” Broussard said. “So they are looking for furniture. But During the holiday it’s smaller pieces like china, vintage jewelry crystal and sterling dinnerware of serving pieces.”
