Welcome to the City of Alliance Activity Report

– All City of Alliance offices will be closed on Monday, May 26th in observance of Memorial Day.  Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 27.

– The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Memorial Day.

– Applications are currently being accepted for the positions of Water/Sewer Maintenance Worker I and Public Safety Dispatcher.  Complete position profiles and applications are available at www.cityofalliance.net.

– Big Blue Bay is scheduled to open Saturday, May 24 if weather conditions and water temperature permits.  Operating hours will be as follows for the month of May:  Noon to 1:00 p.m. Adult Lap Swim; 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Open Swim; 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Adult Lap Swim and 8 and under Family Swim.  Hours of operation will be extended as temperatures continue to rise.

– Season passes for the 2014 swimming season are now available during regular business hours at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center only.  Please bring a 1” x 1” photo of each individual pass holder.  If you do not have the necessary photos, they may be taken for a $2.00 fee per photo.  Prices for season passes are as follows:  Household pass – $130.00; 17 and under – $50.00; 18 and older – $70.00; Lap swim only – $35.00.  For more information, please contact the museum at 762-2384.

– Decorations may be placed on graves at the Alliance City Cemetery beginning today and should be picked up by Sunday, June 1.  Items not removed after the holiday will be picked up on Monday, June 2 and disposed of.

– City of Alliance staff members and volunteers will be at the Alliance City Cemetery from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26 to provide assistance in the location of graves for Memorial Day weather permitting.

– Due to the Memorial Day holiday, there will be no trash pick up on Monday, May 26th which will result in steel containers being emptied only once during the week.

– Now that the Central Park Fountain is in operation for the season, we are asking for the community’s cooperation regarding its maintenance.  The water filtration and disinfection system is not designed to eliminate contaminants such as germs and other transmittable infections which can be introduced by swimmers or animals entering the fountain.  Please contact the Alliance Police Department at 762-4955 if you observe anyone or their pets in the fountain.  If you have any questions regarding the fountain, please contact the Cultural and Leisure Services Department at 762-2384.

– Junior Golf Clinics will be held at Sky View Golf Course each Tuesday during the month of June.  The clinics are open to all boys and girls grades 4 through 12.  Please call the golf course at 762-1446 to sign up!

– Registration for the Summer Reading Program at the Alliance Public Library will continue until June 2nd when the Fizz, Boom, Read and Spark a Reaction activities begin!

– The Sallows Military Museum located at 1101 Niobrara Avenue is open for the season Monday through Friday and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

– The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center is currently hosting a traveling exhibit from the Nebraska State Historical Society entitled, “Photographers and the Plains Indians.”  The exhibit will be available in the museum through mid-September.

– The Alliance Public Library will once again be hosting concerts this summer on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Rose Garden! Barbie Beck will provide the entertainment on Thursday, May 29.  The concerts are free of charge and patrons are asked to bring your own lawn chairs.  In case of inclement weather, concerts will be held in the community meeting rooms.  Refreshments will be provided.  The library will have a short contest about science or science fiction for people who attend the concert.  Come early to research any answers you may not know!  Prizes for ice cream will be awarded to the winners.

– Beginning Tuesday, May 27, the 700 block of Sweetwater Avenue will be closed to thru traffic for approximately 10 days to replace much of the concrete street.  Barricades and detour signs will be posted.  K.L. Wood & Company is serving as the contractor for all the street replacement projects, and will communicate with local residents to address any concerns regarding access to property.

– Passports for the 2014 “Passport to Alliance” scavenger hunt/trivia contest are now available at any manned attraction in Alliance and at Box Butte Central.  Pick up a passport, visit the attractions listed, fill out the answer sheet and drop it by Box Butte Central at 305 Box Butte Avenue and be in the drawing for $50.00 in Chamber bucks!  The contest will run for 12 weeks.  The non-winning entries will remain in the drawing for the entire contest period to increase your chances of winning!

– Potash Avenue will be closed from 2nd Street to Hills Avenue for seven days beginning Tuesday, May 27 while work is being done to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad underpass.  Detours will be provided.

– The Alliance Public Library Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 27 at 1:00 p.m. to discuss “Killing Kennedy” by Bill O’Reilly.  Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk for a nominal fee of $3.50 for shipping from the interlibrary loan program.
