PUEBLO, Colo. – The Chadron State softball team split the final double header in its four-game series weekend series at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
The Thunderwolves won the Sunday opener 7-4, but CSC took the nightcap 4-0 as Aryn Grywusiewicz fired a complete-game 3-hit shutout.
The teams also split on Saturday, the Eagles winning the first game 6-1 and Pueblo the second 10-3.
Sunday, the ThunderWolves jumped out early in the opener against CSC ace Kylee Polsley, who came in with the top record in the RMAC at 8-1.
Pueblo scored 2 runs in the 1st inning on a triple and a groundout. The Eagles scored an unearned run in the 2nd with a single, wild pitch, and error, but the Thunderwolves got solo homers in the 2nd and 3rd as well as an rbi, also in the 3rd, to go up 1-1.
Back-to-back homers by Rebecca Wetsch and Katie Londo in the 4th cut the deficit to 5-3, but Pueblo scored twice in the 6th to the deficit back to 4 at 7-3
CSC tried to rally in the 7th, but could get only one run on a single and 2 errors…a double play wiping out a leadoff single. Polsely went the distance and took the loss, slipping to 8-2 in the RMAC and 9-6 for the season.
In Game Two, the Eagles got the strongest out of the year from Grywusiewcz, who had struggled in the circle since she suffered a concussion when hit in the head with a line drive against Metro State.
Pueblo had only 6 runners on 3 hits and 3 walks, put 2 runners on base only once…with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th…and had a runner reached 3rd only in the 1st.
Sarah Knudsen gave Grywusiewcz the only run she would need by leading off the game with a home run. The Eagles made it 2-0 on single by Jessica Eatmon in the 2nd and ended the scoring in the 4th as Shea Graham hit an RBI double and came home on a single by Knudsen.
With the weekend split, CSU-Pueblo is 15-7 in league play and 18-15 overall, while CSC i 13-9 in the RMAC and 16-18 on the year.
Pueblo slipped to 2nd in the RMAC, a half-game behind 16-7 University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, while the Eagles remain 7th…a game behind both Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis and 1-1/2 behind Metro State and Adams State.
CSC sits 3 full games ahead of 8th place Regis and 4 games ahead of Colorado Christian. New Mexico Highlands, sitting next-to-last at 7-18 in league play and 11-25 overall, comes to Chadron this weekend for a 4-game series with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
We will stream the Saturday doubleheader here on the Panhandle Post. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
