The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District will reopen Sugar Sand Park’s Science Playground to the public on Saturday, March 18 at 9am.  The reopening will kick off a week of circus and science-themed activities during the “Big Top, Big Universe” Spring Break event running March 17- 25.

The inclusive playground will feature new swings, slides, and an expanded climbing structure that will allow for greater access to people of all ages and abilities, and greater visibility for parents and children alike.  In order to preserve the history of the original playground, built in 1995 by both professionals and volunteers, the iconic “smiling face” still stands, as do the names of volunteers on the pickets surrounding the structure.  The updated interactive water feature will showcase various sea creatures, and a new train station-themed toddler play area has been added.

Built to American Society for Testing & Materials standards by Nujak Development, the playground will be stronger and safer, with a soft, impact-attenuating ground surface.  This surface is also the key to the wayfinding feature, allowing parents and children to pinpoint their exact location within the playground through identifying markings. “We are excited to reopen this one-of-a-kind playground for the community,” said Briann Harms, Assistant Director for the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District.  “Safety and inclusiveness were the focus, and we feel that it will exceed everyone’s expectations.”  A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Saturday, March 25 at 10am.

The reopening coincides with the start of Spring Break in Palm Beach County. During the week off from school the Community Center will offer a multitude of programs including:

Explorium Spring Break blast weeklong camp

Multi-day camp programs including fitness, 3D printing, drama, and cooking

Juggling, art classes, and family activities such as Starlab Adventure

Drop in activities like Sugar Sand Park Playdate and face painting outdoors

A family movie and theatre show

Food vendors and trucks will be on site from Wednesday through Saturday (March 22-25)

The week culminates with Cirque Du Jour’s It’s Circus…It’s Science family show in the Willow Theatre, which explores the “science of the circus” and help kids familiarize themselves with principles of physics through circus tricks, stunts, and skills. Tickets for the show can be purchased in person at the Box Office, by calling 561.347.3948, or online at www.willowtheatre.org.
