Ok, I found this hideous stool at Goodwill the other day and after I bought I almost didn’t paint it because I couldn’t imagine it looking good when it was finished – but I’m glad I did because now I love it!

I have 3 different things I wanted to do to it and I’ll list them here:

1. Paint it – I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, the color “Arles”. Do add extra character and style, you can distress it and age it with dark wax or dark glaze. I distressed it, but skipped the dark wax and glaze this time.

2. Integrate Burlap – At Michael’s they had some burlap rolls that are great for adding character to just about anything. I thought, what about wrapping the stool with burlap when its done? So, I did it! I like it!

3. Add a Pattern to the Top – The other thing I plan to do to this stool, but haven’t done yet is create a linen effect with paint, criss cross lines across the top that make it look like a linen or fabric pattern. I have tried and failed at this a few times, so I need to spend more time researching the right brush to make it happen. If you know how to do this – email me! I’ll post pictures when I figure it out. There are other patterns you can add to the top too – mod podge wallpaper, paint stripes, stencil a design. These are all great things that will add character to it.
