About Animals Asia

Animals Asia is devoted to ending the barbaric practice of bear bile farming and improving the welfare of animals in China and Vietnam. It promotes compassion and respect for all animals and works to bring about long-term change.

It has three major programmes: End Bear Bile Farming, Cat and Dog Welfare, and Action Against Cruelty.

End Bear Farming

Animals Asia has been rescuing bears from the horrors of the bear bile industry since 2000 and is the only organisation with a bear sanctuary in China. Its founder and CEO, British born Jill Robinson MBE, is widely recognised as the world’s leading expert on the cruel bear bile industry having campaigned against it since 1993. Endangered Asiatic black bears, or moon bears, are kept for up to 30 years in tiny cages, unable to move or turn around, being” milked” daily for their bile through open holes carved into their abdomens. The charity operates bear sanctuaries in China and Vietnam; it has rescued over 400 bears; it studies the effects of bile extraction on bears; it engages with the traditional medicine community to promote alternatives and reduce demand for bile; it runs extensive public-awareness campaigns to show the public the cruelty of the industry; it monitors the trade in bear bile and parts as well as trends in consumption and it engages with policymakers and government authorities.

Cat and Dog Welfare

Animals Asia investigates and monitors the live-animal meat markets in China, provides funding and training for Chinese animal-welfare groups, promotes humane population-management and disease-control measures, runs conferences, workshops and public-awareness campaigns and uses animal ambassadors to promote empathy for all animals. The charity works with government and communities to promote better welfare regulations.

Zoos and Safari Parks

Animals Asia works to increase animal-welfare conditions in zoos and safari parks in China. It conduct investigations, provides training workshops to animal-management staff at zoos, runs clinical workshops for zoo-based vets, gives educational presentations in Chinese schools, and works with government authorities to improve performing animal welfare.

Animals Asia has offices in Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Australia, the US, Italy, Germany and the UK.

Animals Asia’s UK Patron is Virginia McKenna, with UK Ambassadors Peter Egan and Lesley Nicol. It is further supported by numerous celebrities including Ricky Gervais, Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed, Joanna Lumley.
