Fun fact: There is a hotel in St. Lucia where a couple once spent five days without ever leaving the room.

How?

Three things: an open-air infinity pool instead of a fourth wall, a private chef and private dining sanctuary, and discreet yet around-the-clock butlers.

That’s without even mentioning the view or the thread count.

Ultimate privacy tends to be the deciding factor for what makes a hotel room feel incredibly intimate and sexy, said Gemma Miles, a senior travel consultant for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, an authority in what makes hotels romantic and sensual.

“You want to be able to spend time doing very little with absolutely no interruptions,” Miles told Yahoo Travel, regarding what people prioritize when booking a couples escape. “But you want the knowledge that service is just a phone call or bell pull away if you need your champagne topped up.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt to put those things in a beautiful location.

From sensory-stimulating bath products to the best bed linens money can buy, the places below pull out all of the stops when it comes to engineering the ultimate hotel fantasy.

Viceroy New York, New York City

The only thing sexier than a penthouse view of Central Park is a penthouse bathroom with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking New York City’s famed green acres. “If you have a bit of an exhibitionist side,” said Miles about Suite 57 — which takes up the entire north side of the top floor — “the shower is right [there].”

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, Ninh Van Bay, Vietnam

It’s easy to see why Mr. & Mrs. Smith voted this the Sexiest Bedroom in the World in 2014, in this cove of East Vietnam paradise. Sitting on the edge of the ocean and overlooking the bay, the Water Villa has private-path access, a ladder into the ocean (“The ultimate invitation to late-night skinny dipping,” said Miles.), and an on-call butler so you can remain secluded for your entire stay.

Bellevue Syrene, Sorrento, Italy

“I love a room with something unexpected and unique,” said Miles about the Roccia Suite at this Sorrento residence, which truly transports you to another time. There is actually a hydro-massage pool at the foot of an elegantly draped canopy bed. It all sits within stones recreated from an ancient Roman cave. “Details like that really make a room stand out.”

Alila Villas Soori, Tabanan, Bali

There are five different bedroom options offered at this modern Bali haven, and “spacious” is the word that comes to mind for all of them. “It’s like you’re king and queen of your own little kingdom,” Miles said of the impressive indoor-outdoor square footage at your disposal. Manicured gardens, outdoor pavilions and terraces, and an infinity pool are added bonuses.

La Réserve Ramatuelle, Ramatuelle, France

Minutes away from the village of Saint-Tropez, these Provençal-style villas are an interior architect’s dream and contribute to the rooms living up to their description online (A Secret Refuge). But the main allure here is simple: having a perfect place to watch the sunset. “I’m a sucker for a magnificent Mediterranean view,” said Miles.

Il Salviatino, Florence, Italy

In the hills over Florence, lovers in the Affresco Suite marvel at an 1886 ceiling fresco by Bruschi and two oil canvases by Gabriel van der Leeuw, known as Il Fiammingo. “The whole hotel just oozes rich, decadent glamour,” said Miles about Il Salviatino, which combines a Renaissance past with high-tech toys of the future. But Miles believes the staff is the best part. “As soon as you pull up, you’re greeted by rather dashing gentlemen in perfectly cut Italian suits,” she said, “and that sets the tone for your entire stay.”

Chateau Marmont, Los Angeles

Privacy in Hollywood (Photo: Chateau Marmont)

Though Miles admits that this star-studded haunt may be an obvious Hollywood choice, she can’t help but admire the undeniable je ne sais quoi of the André Balazs hideaway. “It’s so discreet but has such a decadent vibe,” she said. The cottages, bungalows, and penthouses are often used as temporary homes, and they come with formal dining rooms, balconies, and private terraces. The walls are soundproof, and the earthquake-proof building was literally constructed to withstand any bump in the night.

Casa Buonocore, Positano, Italy

A dream destination for honeymooners in Italy (Photo: Casa Buonocore)

If you’re planning to spend your honeymoon on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Miles suggests this historic and family-run boutique hotel. “It’s easy to see why the Amalfi is still the top spot for honeymooners,” said Miles, as she quickly rattled off the reasons — the sun, the sea, the views, and the food are tantalizing traps for newlyweds. “The deluxe room has 360-degree views of the sea, the mountains, and the vertiginously photogenic village of Positano itself.” Picture perfect.

Les Dames du Panthéon, Paris

Each of the six floors at this newly renovated Parisian femme fatale pays homage to one of France’s leading ladies. “My favorite so far is the Edith Piaf room, which has a bittersweet tribute to the great love of her tragic life, boxer Marcel Cerdan,” said Miles. With its “if these walls could talk” vibe and bar-none attention to detail, the boudoir beckons you to stay in bed all day and all night.

You don’t have to break the bank to soak up every ounce of romance that Provence has to offer. With not one but two roll-top baths side by side, Miles says the master suite at this countryside manor is effortlessly elegant in detail and an overall, top-notch option if you’re looking for a more affordable stay. “Friends of mine honeymooned there and have barely stopped talking about it since,” she said.

Four Seasons Maldives, Landaa Giraavaru, Maldives

A serene couples hideaway (Photo: Four Seasons)

Deserted beaches, champagne cruises, and the picture-perfect Maldives waters serve as the backdrop for the resort’s beach villa hideaways in this secluded part of the world. A jungle path leads guests to their 12-meter lap pool, where the terrace houses a traditional Maldivian swing, daybed, and outdoor shower garden. If a mood-lit bath is preferred, guests can opt for a huge tub inside, or à deux.

Jade Mountain, Anse Chastanet, St. Lucia

Last, but not least: this is the place that aforementioned couple spent a romantic five days inside one of these intimate yet vast sanctuaries. With open-air views of the Pitons and major-domos (butlers) who are so stealth that they appear only when beckoned, couples feel like VIPs, floating through picturesque St. Lucia scenery. If the infinity pool and private dining experiences get old, the oversized bed and candle-lit couples massage are to sure keep guests occupied.
