Boy Scout Troop 38 will be hosting a spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Elk’s Club, 223 Front St. in Owego. Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and children, kids three and under are free. Carry out will be available. Bids for the silent auction will be accepted until 7:30 p.m.
Boy Scout Troop 38, chartered by First Union Presbyterian Church on Temple Street in Owego, has successfully been selected for a 2016 trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Troop 38 scouts will be camping with their own unit as well as meeting and sharing experiences with other crews from all over America.
Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s largest national high-adventure base. It covers 137,000 acres – about 214 square miles – of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. Philmont Scout Ranch provides an unforgettable adventure in sky-high backpacking country along hundreds of miles of rugged, rocky trails.
Troop 38’s Philmont crew has committed themselves to a 10 day 80 mile hike over parts of the Santa Fe Trail once blazed by Kit Carson. Their crew will be made up of industrious boys, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old, who are planning to embark on this unforgettable adventure.
This experience comes with a price and Troop 38’s Philmont crew is trying to raise a large portion through fundraisers so that any boy who wants to participate can go. In addition to the spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Jan. 30, the boys will be going door-to-door collecting cans and bottles on Saturday, Feb. 13. Call Ann at (607) 621-3064 to schedule a pick-up of any cans and bottles you want to donate. Cans and bottles may also be dropped off at A&S Redemption Center located at 442 North Ave. in Owego through Aug. 1. An account has been opened under “Troop 38”.
