UWERN JONG stumbles upon the stunning work of photographer Fan Ho…

At the end of this year, I’m headed to Hong Kong, to see in 2015 in one of my favourite cities in the world. Instead of the usual harbour lights, I shall be staying in a part of the island that is less-travelled, but rapidly up and coming, at the OVOLO SOUTHSIDE – on yes, you guessed it, the Southern Part of Hong Kong Island. This previously industrial part of the island is seeing rapid gentrification, as hipster Hong Kong residents and expats alike are relocating there because of its “Meat Packing District”, warehouse/loft-space type vibe.

Because of this, I wanted to get some insight into the Hong Kong of the not too distant past – and I happened upon the spell-binding work of photographer Fan Ho, who captured street-life in Hong Kong in the 1950′s to dramatic and breath-taking effect. Below is some of his inspirational work from his latest book.

The latest edition of his sold-out book, HONG KONG YESTERDAY (4th Edition) is a beautiful look at Hong Kong during the 1950s and 60s, a unique series of images with no image duplication between his two other books – also worth a look at – The Living Theatre and Fan Ho: Hong Kong Memoir. The book is available from THE MODERN BOOK GALLERY.
