CHRISTIANSBURG — Fiscal conservatives across Montgomery County can exhale: The proposed county budget for fiscal year 2014-15 does not include tax increases — yet.
The proposed budget, presented by County Administrator F. Craig Meadows Monday night, is $171.6 million – a 2 percent ($4 million) increase from the current budget – and represents county revenue and expenditures from July 1 to June 30, 2015.
The proposal includes a public school budget of $121.1 million, or nearly 71 percent of the total proposed budget. The proposed school budget is a 2 percent ($2.5 million) increase over the current budget. The proposed $42.1 million for school operations is unchanged from the current budget.

The Board of Supervisors has scheduled seven meetings before adoption of the budget:
March 10, 7:15 p.m., regular meeting
March 17, 6 p.m., budget work session
March 24, 7:15 p.m. adjourned meeting
March 25, 7 p.m., Christiansburg High School
April 3, 6 p.m., public hearings on advertised budget and tax rate
April 8, 7 p.m., Margaret Beeks Elementary School
April 14, 7:15 p.m., budget and tax rate adoption
Unless otherwise noted, all meetings will held at the Montgomery County Government Center.
