Scarisbrick Hall pupil Richard Michell wins Silver at Durham Leon Paul Epee Fencing Tournament
Scarisbrick Hall pupil, Richard Michell, competed in the Durham LPJS on Sunday winning the Silver medal.
This was the hardest LPJS so far this year with two Cadet internationals taking part, Dominic Paul an England U14 from Stockport and Matthew Dickinson a Great Britain U16 from Newcastle.
Despite loosing the initial seeding fight to Matthew, Richard managed to score sufficient points in his subsequent bouts to be seeded first before the direct eliminations, including beating Dominic by a conclusive 5-2.
Richard made swift work of the weaker fencers to progress to the final with Matthew who had equally worked his way up on the other side of the draw.
The final started with two double hits, with both fencers trying to gain an early advantage and dominate the plays of blade.
However Matthew’s experience started to show through as he gradually extended his lead. Richard battled to the last, with a daring fleche attack at tournament point, but Matthew replied with a lightning lunge of his own to win with a final score of 15-10.
Richard’s silver medal, along with his gold from Yorkshire and bronze from Cornwall, places him joint second in the Leon Paul U15 National Series with a tournament in hand over the current number one.
