Planned roadworks in the North West: Weekly summary for Monday 1  – Sunday 7 July

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M55 Junction 1 Broughton

Lancashire County Council is carrying out improvement work at the roundabout linking Junction 1 of the M55 with the A6 at Broughton to reduce delays at one of Preston’s worst congestion hotspots. The scheme will widen the junctions with the A6, add traffic controls to all junctions, and make it safer to use for pedestrians and cyclists by installing new crossings while retaining the existing subways. The work is expected to be completed by December. M56 Junctions 1 with M60 to 3, Baguley, South Manchester

A maintenance and repair project is taking place on a motorway bridge over a railway line in South Manchester. The eight-month scheme to repair the bridge – which carries the M56 Sharston Link over the Cheadle Branch railway line – is due to be completed by October. It involves replacing the existing parapets, repairing abutments, installing new expansion joints and bearings maintenance. Drivers are being advised that both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M56 between Junction 1 with the M60 and Junction 3 at Baguley, as well as junction slip roads, will be closed overnight, from 9pm until 5am, to allow the work to be carried out safely. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place when the road is closed.

M60 Junction 25, Stockport

The M60 anti-clockwise entry slip at Junction 25 will be closed due to carriageway resurfacing, between 10pm and 5am from Monday 1 July to Friday 5 July.

M62 Junction 20 Oldham and Rochdale

Work is taking place to upgrade lighting and safety barriers around Junction 20 of the M62 at the interchange with the A627(M). The three-month project is due to be completed by Friday 30 August, ahead of the August bank holiday weekend. Some overnight closures of the eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads will be needed to allow the work to be done safely. Traffic will be diverted to Junction 19 when the slip roads are closed.

A590 Newby Bridge

A month-long Highways Agency project to improve safety is underway along the A590 at Newby Bridge in Cumbria.  The project involves rock face netting, rock catch netting and new safety barriers along a section of the dual carriageway at Backbarrow, just west of Newby Bridge village. One lane of the westbound carriageway will be closed for the duration of the project and there will be a temporary speed limit of 30mph.  The work is due to be completed by Sunday 21 July.

A66 Cumbrian Border

Work is underway to investigate a section of carriageway in need of repair along the A66 between West Bowes and the Cumbrian Border.  The eastbound carriageway around Stainmore is closed and a contraflow in operation on the westbound carriageway.  A 50mph speed limit is also in place for approximately 10km.

- Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

- Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

- Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

- Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

- Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
